《先知诗译》东岐明 ◎喜哀第八 然後一位妇人说：『向我们讲说关於喜悦与哀愁吧！』 他回答说： 『你的喜悦是你不掩的哀愁。 　同一泉源，涌你欢笑，往往也曾满盈在你泪水。 　那还能如何呢[1]？ 　哀愁刻凿你的生命[2]愈深，愈多喜悦你便能容受。 　你那承托美酒的杯觞，不也曾正是那在陶窑中烧炼的胚杯吗[3]？ 　你那抚慰心灵的琵琶[4]，不也曾正是那在刀匕下凿空的材木吗？ 　在你喜悦，当深观你心；你会发现，当下正予你喜悦的，往昔必曾给你哀愁。 　在你哀愁，当再观你心；你会明白，其实你为之悲泣的，正是由你过往欢乐。 你们之中有些人说：「喜悦大於哀愁」，而另些人说：「不！哀愁才是较大」。 但我告诉你们，它们乃是形影不离，共同到来[5]。 当其一独自与你共餐，切记另一正酣睡你床。 你恰就似那天秤，浮悬在你喜悦与哀愁之间。 　只有在你空灵[6]时，才会静止平衡。 　当那藏宝者提起你来秤祂金银时，就需你悲欢哀喜的起落[7]。』 [1] 此句原文中的 it，是指陈着前面两句所述，关於喜悦与哀愁的共生真相。後面所述 you shall find it is only that 中的 it 也是指陈着同一真相。因为此句中文语气上不适合用「它」，所以用「那」来勉强代表 it。 [2] 此句原文中的 being，原意是指生命存在的本质。此处为求语气通畅，便以「生命」一词代表。 [3] 此句原文中的 wine，不仅是指「酒」，在英文意涵里也象徵隐喻着「令人沉醉的美好事物」。此种隐喻无法以中文语词完整表达，所以只能勉强以「美酒」一词翻译。而此句中的「杯觞」与「杯胚」，在原文中都仅是 cup。为了对应下句的行文语韵，所以衍生修饰词语。 [4] 此句原文的 lute ，乃是状似琵琶的一种西洋弹奏乐器，故用「琵琶」一词翻译。 [5] 此句中文翻译，为求语气流畅，而剪接了两句原文。语意大致不变，只是断句有变。 [6] 此句原文中的 empty，是指心灵空寂而无情感扰动的超凡脱俗状态，在此勉强译为「空灵」。 [7] 此句所谓「秤祂金银」，乃是意味其人格品质受到神主审判。 -- JOY AND SORROW Then a woman said, "Speak to us of Joy and Sorrow." And he answered: Your joy is your sorrow unmasked. And the selfsame well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears. And how else can it be? The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain. Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven? And is not the lute that soothes your spirit the very wood that was hollowed with knives? When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy. When you are sorrowful, look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight. Some of you say, "Joy is greater than sorrow," and others say, "Nay, sorrow is the greater." But I say unto you, they are inseparable. Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed. Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy. Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced.
