"If I shall hear the heart no longer beat"
--- upon choking with swollen throat
and under dead threat
If I shall hear the heart no longer beat
Save sole untimely Death doth knell twice send;
If life shall cease to subsidise chanc'd feat,
Let keenly fire bequench'd and passion end.
The ardent sun but full traject'ry round,
And barely made undone my screened eyes;
Contract, fie, tainting blight that breathes bound,
That gnaws the hollow sings expiring sighs.
O woe is me, Death's clowning claw shall claim
The pinions yet unspread, to futile store,
When higher goals were they destin'd to aim,
And wanton airs hath just a venting pour.
Now I shall bear the heart no more will beat,
And gasp I be, Ah! life's nectar DOTH cheat!
