Children 　※此篇译文可供网上自由转载，也可供印出自阅，转载引用需注明出处： http://amidha.myweb.hinet.net/books/TheProphet.htm 　　若要印刷译文在书刊上，需先徵求译者同意，请联络： 　　　 [email protected] 东岐明 ◎孩童第四 然後，一名怀抱婴孩的妇人说：『向我们讲说孩子吧！』 接着他说： 『你们孩子不是你们的孩子[1]。 　他们是生命为祂自己所渴盼的子女[2]。 　他们藉由你，而非来自你。 　虽然伴随你，却非属於你。 　你可以施予他们你的爱，却非你的想法，因为他们有自己想法。 　你可以用房舍留居他们身躯，却非他们心灵， 　因为他们心灵居住於来日房舍，那里是你无法造访，连你梦想亦无法企及。 　你可以努力像似他们，但别想要使他们像你。 　因为生命既不回返，也不会逗留昨日。 　你是那弓，你孩子乃是那活生生的箭，由你射出[3]。 　射手望见无尽路途[4]上的靶标，用力弯起你，使箭射得既快又远。 　让你由於欢喜乐意，而弯在那射手掌中； 　因为，正如祂爱那飞驰的箭，祂也爱那稳当的弓。』 《先知》The Prophet 〈孩童第四〉 终 　 【译注】 [1] 英文的 you ，并没有区分单复数，即使相应的动词变化也不区分。这是因为在英 文思维的观念中，作为听者的第二人称，并不分别单复数，所以 you 就同时对应着中 文的第二人称“你”与“你们”，而 you 的中文翻译就必须视上下文情况而定。关於 代名词的意义区分，太平洋群岛中的新美拉尼西亚语有个更明显的例子，在这种语言中 区分两种“我们”：一种是包含听者，另一种是不包含听者。所以中文的“我们”要译 成新美拉尼西亚语时，就如同英文的 you 要译成中文时，也会遇到要如何对应的问题 。在我的译文中，对於 you 的译法，是以文感优美为主；也就是说，只要不影响到文 义，我会根据译文优美与否，来决定使用“你”或者“你们”。 [2] the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself 的直译是“生命渴盼祂 自己的子女”，但如此译文不但容易弄错意思，而且也没传达意义，所以才译为“生命 为祂自己所渴盼的子女”。 [3] 此句因为弓是复数，本应译作“你们”，但为行文美感，所以译为“你”。此句原 文以 from which 联结两句，可中文直译会文气弱化，所以最後用“由你射出”来联结 两句。 [4] the infinite 在此是意谓“无穷无尽的时空”，意喻人生的时空生涯。为求行文 通畅，所以没有译出“时空”。 ------------------------------------------------------------ CHILDREN And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, "Speak to us of Children." And he said: Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of to-morrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
