The wife of saxophone legend John Coltrane passed away on Friday January 12 from respiratory failure at the West Hills Hospital and Medical Center, Los Angeles. Alice – a critically acclaimed pianist, organist and harpist in her own right, noted for her "astral" compositions – managed the estate and archive of her late husband, who died in 1967 of liver failure. After his death, Alice converted to Hinduism and helped found the Vedantic Center, a spiritual commune in California. Her last recording was 2004's Translinear Light. --
