Not only have to be capable of doing so, but also have to be mentally prepared about that. That's an advantage of Stanford, because after you survive the competition, you will be the master in that field. It's also a disadvantage, because some one like me does not have the strong mind to be in that competition. But considering all visible conditions, Stanford is surely one of the best school in EE. The location, the funding, the professors, the colleagues. UMich is also a very good school. But I also heard some body who can not get any financial support after their 2nd Ph.D. year. The weather there cannot be compared with the california. So if I were you, without considering the most important fact, the professors, I'll choose Stanford.
