I think clear hand-writing is enough. Actually, a lot of American's writings are very difficult to recognize. That's why they need a word processor or a computer. If I were you. I will choose A4 size and use a laser printer to print the form. It surely attracts the committee, but not in the positive way. Why not ask for my opinions:) It surely will do a lot of help if you can write different versions of your SOP. But the point is it do help you being admitted, but may not help you to find the school suiting you most. You may be admitted to a school that you finally find that it does not suit you. So my suggestion is DO NOT make too much modification for different versions. Small modification will do only good to you. --
