绘本作家──李欧‧李奥尼
李欧.李奥尼,1910年出生於荷兰.阿姆斯特丹,1999年10月过世,享年89岁。父亲是
比利时的犹太商人,母亲是荷籍的女高音,李奥是独子,从小就和艺术气息浓厚的母亲
这边的家族来往较密。由於父亲工作的关系,他十三岁时离开了童年故乡,在美国小
住过三年,1925年又迁居到义大利,在杰诺瓦(Genoa)求学,一直到修完经济学博士,
结婚後,才转到米兰工作。1939年,因法西斯主义盛行,欧洲兴起反犹太的浪潮,
在纳粹侵犯的前夕举家走避美国,1945年入籍美国,成为美国公民。
李欧在美国费城找到广告代理商,得到艺术总监助理的职位,他的天份与才华因此
被发掘,在美国的设计界大放异彩。1959年首作绘本-《little blue and little
yellow》 (小蓝和小黄,台英出版)诞生。虽然以49岁之年开始创作绘本,但其後,
则陆续创作了三十多本绘本。其作品不仅脍炙人口,也纷纷赢得各种奖项,可以说是
一位当代颇为重要的绘本作家。
李欧.李奥尼所有作品,都是由他自写自画完成。这是他重视文与图的紧密结合,
为了避免在创作过程中必须有所妥协,所以,他始终坚持独力作业的原则。另外,
他也曾经说过,在创作绘本时,他并不在意读者的年龄层。他认为一本好的儿童读物
应该能引起所有尚未丧失赤子之心的人的共鸣。他说:「我真的不全然是为孩子创作的。
我做这些书,是为了我自己和我的朋友们心里面恒常不变,仍然是孩子的那个部份而
做的。」
李欧在艺术的领域中堪称十项全能:绘画、雕刻、平面设计、摄影、陶艺、儿童书
制作…样样精通。所以我们可说他是画家、作家、讲师、雕刻家、评论家、平面广告
设计家、艺术指导…….。不过在诸多才能中,最为人称道的是他的平面设计和儿童绘本。
李欧创作绘本的机缘是一趟不经意的火车之旅;49岁那年,有一天从New York要
带着两个孙子回康州、格林威治镇。在火车上他试过各种方法都无法让孩子安静的坐在
椅子上,灵机一动从《Life》杂志上顺手撕下几片有颜色的纸片,编了一个故事。一个
圆形蓝色块和一个圆形黄色块,他们俩是好朋友,当他们拥抱就变成了绿。他没想到
这个故事让两个好动的孙子安安静静的坐回家,讲完快乐圆满的结局,孩子又央求一遍
一遍的讲着。回到家李欧画出初稿,隔天他的朋友、一位童书的编辑到他家吃晚餐看到了
《小蓝和小黄》就决定出版这一本书。
李欧他曾表示,众多绘本中,他个人最喜欢《田鼠阿佛》,因为阿佛就是儿时的他,
总是不太在意别人眼中重要的事,而整天坐在一旁静静的冥想、做白日梦、独享一些
心灵的美好。他为了给和他一样爱思考的孩子一点心有戚戚焉的认同感,他带着一点点
自传的意味,写下《田鼠阿佛》。
