Lanka styles Venus’s Wimbledon
MAS Active made the star of Wimbledon ease into victory in comfort
By Ayesha Inoon
As she set the courts aflame with her sizzling strokes and served to win her
fourth Wimbledon title earlier this month, not many knew that the outfit worn
by Venus Williams were made here, in Sri Lanka. The Layered Bra Top in
traditional Wimbledon white was made especially for Venus by MAS Active, part
of MAS Holdings Ltd.
MAS Active was the chosen vendor for Reebok, UK – the official clothing
sponsor for the golden girl of tennis, who also became the lowest-ranked
woman to win Wimbledon, beating Marion Bartoli of France at the All England
Club.
The Williams sisters – Venus and Serena – are known for their love of
on-court fashion and glittering accessories, apart from their domination of
women's tennis. Venus is known to have designed her own sportswear. However,
unlike the daring corset-style dress she wore in the 2003 championships –
which she designed together with American fashion designer Diane von
Furstenberg, creating fashion history – she seems to have put comfort first
this time around.
“The Absolute Fitness Layered Bra Top is unique, made to Venus’s
measurements, according to specifications given by Reebok,” says Development
Merchandiser at MAS Active, Rifqa Razik, who handled the order. Explaining
that they were given the order four months prior to the Wimbledon tournament,
she adds that shell and mesh fabrics were used, and that the garment was made
by PlayDry technology, which enhances its technical suitability as
sportswear. The garments had then been shipped directly to Wimbledon.
Wimbledon has always been known for its fashion statements as much as its
tennis. This year too, Maria Sharapova's Swan Lake dress and Tatiana
Golovin's red undershorts had created quite a stir. It was reported that
Venus made her own mark with lycra shorts that she wore spontaneously at a
match when she felt her skirt was ‘too big’.
MAS Active is one of the suppliers for casual and sports wear for Nike,
Reebok, Adidas, Gap and Speedo. Apart from the 20 pieces manufactured for
Wimbledon, they are also making Venus’s clothes for the US Open Tournaments
this year.

Venus Williams, Steve & Barry's Swing Deal For $19.98
August 23, 2007
By Barry Janoff
NEW YORK --
Tennis star Venus Williams has signed a deal to design and market
a line of high-performance, lifestyle and active clothing and footwear
exclusively for retailer Steve & Barry’s, Brandweek has learned. Williams
plans to wear items from the collection, called EleVen, while playing at the
U.S. Open, which begins on Aug. 27.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Steve & Barry’s unveils EleVen at a promotion today at their Manhattan Mall
store in New York, with Williams in attendance. However, the line itself will
not hit shelves until November with a dedicated EleVen section within Steve &
Barry’s locations. As with all items at the retailer, clothing and shoes in
the EleVen collection will be priced at $19.98 and less.
EleVen is the address where Williams grew up in Lynwood, Calif.
Williams will appear in marketing and make personal appearances; a dedicated
Web site will link from www.SteveandBarrys.com. Marketing is being handled by
The Mastermind Group, New York, which has been overseeing efforts for Steve &
Barry’s “Starbury” collection from Stephon Marbury of the NBA’s New York
Knicks. The Mastermind Group previously worked with Venus and her sister
Serena in 2003 for a national promotion for Wrigley’s Doublemint Gum.
Venus joins a growing stable of athletes and celebrities who have exclusive
collections with the retailer, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Amanda Bynes,
golfer Bubba Watson, Marbury and Ben Wallace of the NBA’s Chicago Bulls,
whose $14.95 Big Ben shoes will hit Steve & Barry’s shelves to coincide with
the 2007-08 NBA season in October.
Williams, 27, studied fashion design at the Art Institute of Florida and
previously designed clothing she has worn on-court, including a line for
Wilson’s Leather. She also has worn a line designed for her by Reebok.
The
deal with Port Washington, N.Y.-based Steve & Barry’s was signed before she
won the Wimbledon grand slam tennis tournament in July. Williams’ agent is
Carlos Fleming at IMG, Cleveland.
