I was at the match last night and I just have to say one thing -- SERENA LOOKS AWESOME!!! As most of you know, I've been upset with Serena for months because of the shape she was in, especially down in Australia when I turned off the TV during her match because I was so made at the way she looked. Well, forget that!! I went to the tournament last night specifically to see what she looked like and I was damned impressed. The girl is totally toned and in shape. Her waist is back to being tiny; her arms are toned and muscular; her legs are STUNNING and she moves like the old Serena. She got to every ball. Myskina hit several drop shots that Serena got to in plenty of time and hit winners (mostly); she got back in plenty of time to run down lobs; she hit one serve at 127mph and the crowd was in awe. I missed the first three games. But, from the beginning, Serena looked to be in total control. Myskina seem to be nervous, for some reason. Serena said afterwards that she still felt "rusty" but she didn't look rusty at all. She did overhit a couple of overheads (long) but she had no trouble getting to balls and no trouble at all returning serve. The match was over before a lot of people even got to their seats!!! Serena really, really looked great and very focused on what she was doing. She didn't have any sort of let down and was aggressive all the time, pinning Myskina behind the baseline. Poor Nastya was so frustrated. I'm sure she thought she had a chance to finally beat Serena. After the match, Serena gave a nice on-court interview where she said she was "happy to be in Cincinnati" and that she "loved being here" and she thanked everyone for supporting her. (Actually, she wasn't really "in Cincinnati" she was 25 miles north in Mason, but what the heck, she probably didn't know our airport is in Kentucky. Then she hit several signed balls into the stands. (I didn't get one but I didn't try because I just got a manicure. She got a standing O when she won and another standing O when she walked off the court. While she was walking off the PA announcer said "Serena's next match will be Thursday evening. The ticket office is open now. Buy your tickets." I had NEVER, in all my trips to tennis tournaments heard that type of announcement!!! Amazing. Then HUNDREDS of fans waited for her to come out of the player entrance to go to her car. Again, amazing. The girl still has the touch. --
