PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - Bothered with nagging injuries, Venus and Serena Williams have withdrawn from next week's Family Circle Cup. The Williams sisters announced their withdrawals on Friday. Venus, who lost her lone match this season in the first round of the Australian Open, was forced out of the $1.34 million Tier I event held in Charleston, South Carolina due to a right elbow sprain that she previously suffered. "I have really been looking forward to competing at the Family Circle Cup, and Charleston has become one of my favorite cities," Venus said. "I regret that I will not have the opportunity to compete there this year and look forward to returning to competition in the very near future." Serena remains sidelined due to a left knee injury that has prevented her from playing nearly all of 2006. A seven-time Grand Slam winner, Serena has just a 2-1 mark this season, reaching the third round of the Australian Open, the lone event she has competed in. "I am very disappointed to have to withdraw from the Family Circle Cup due to ongoing pain in my left knee," Serena said. "I know that the Family Circle Cup will host another incredible event this year and I look forward to playing in Charleston again next year." Even without both of the Williams sisters, the field for the Family Circle Cup will include four-time Grand Slam champion Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium, former U.S. Open title holder Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia and Switzerland's Patty Schnyder, the No. 9 player in the world. --
