Venus Williams too ill to play Nordea Light Open Venus Williams, seeded number one in this year's Nordea Light Open, has announced today that she will no longer be competing because of flu. Williams, who was expected to arrive in Stockholm on Sunday and play her first match Tuesday evening, says she is "deeply sorry" for missing the tournament, which she had been planning on attending for the past several months. "My doctor says it is impossible for me to play next week," Williams said. Tournament director, Jenny Lindstrom, says Venus's absence is a nightmare for her and everyone who had been organising the Nordea Light Open over the last year. She also expressed additional sadness for all the boys and girls who are inspired by tennis and were looking forward to seeing one of the sport's biggest stars. However, as Jenny Lindstrom put it, "the show must go on". Mary Santangelo of Italy will now move out of the qualifing group to take Williams's place in the tournament and Maria Anderson of Sweden will get the opportunity to compete by replacing Santangelo. --
