Schnyder, continuing her impressive form of late, led the top-seeded Davenport 64 54 (on serve) before the American surged, claiming nine of the last 10 games to win 46 75 61. After losing a tight first set, Davenport held an early break in the second, only to see it disappear as she began to take ill. "I tried so hard in the first set but the balls were flying on me," said Davenport. "I started feeling unwell at 2-1 in the second set, then I held for 3-1. The next few games were a blur. I was trying to keep the points short." Games went with serve through to 5-all in the second set, when Schnyder, who had been holding serve quite easily up to that point, made a couple of uncharacteristic errors to let Davenport back into the match. Davenport consolidated the break in the 12th game to level the match at one set all. From then on, it was all Davenport, who reached her third final of 2005. "My shots were wild at first but I was finally able to control them and keep the balls in," noted Davenport. "I was able to eek out the second set and in the third set she made more unforced errors." "I had a good chance in the second set and had my moment," said Schnyder. "I went for it and took my chances, but wasn't able to win. "I felt like my serve and my game were slipping away and she kept getting better and better." Jankovic advanced to the biggest final of her career when world No.4 and No.2 seed Serena Williams retired with a right shoulder tendon strain. Trailing 60 43 (Williams's first 6-0 set loss in nearly six years), Williams pulled out of the semifinal, saying the balls being used this week had caused the shoulder problem. "Ever since I've been practising I've been getting the same symptoms," said Williams. "My arm's hurting really bad where I serve. My whole arm hurts, except for my hand and my wrist. That's doing excellent right now. But everything else hurts, which could lead to another abdominal strain." Her serve visibly weakened by the injury from the outset, Williams dropped serve three times in the opening set, losing the first seven games of the match and attracting a warning for smashing her racquet. Williams broke Jankovic's serve to level at 1-all, then held for 2-1. But Jankovic still had the upper hand, breaking Williams's serve to lead 3-2. At 4-3, Williams called the Tour's primary health care provider onto court, but instead of receiving treatment, the American spent several minutes in discussion with the trainer. It was then that Williams decided to retire. It was only the fourth time in Williams's career she has retired during a match, after 1998 Wimbledon (retired in third round vs. Virginia Ruano Pascual), 2000 Amelia Island (retired vs. Paola Suarez in second round) and 2000 Canadian Open (retired vs. Martina Hingis in the final). "From the beginning of the match she wasn't serving the way she usually serves," said Jankovic. "She has one of the best serves in women's tennis. I didn't know what was going on with her, and I'm disappointed she couldn't play a real match and that she had to pull out." "It doesn't take long, just getting away from the environment and getting back to a regular ball," said Williams of her recovery period. "It takes three to four days which isn't bad compared to weeks and weeks which is what happened with my stomach. It was weeks before I could get better," Williams referring to the abdominal injury she incurred in last year's final of the WTA Tour Championships. In response to claims the balls contributed to Williams's injury, Tour CEO Larry Scott said: "Player health and concern with equipment is of utmost importance to me and the Tour, and we have exhaustively looked into concerns expressed and analysed all possible facts. "If there was any factual evidence to support that a ball was a contributor to player injuries, we would act immediately and decisively to pull a ball from Tour play. "I am sympathetic to those players who are concerned about their soreness or injuries, but after careful review we have determined that no such evidence of a correlation exists." The doubles final will be between the Top 2 seeds. No.1 doubles team Ruano Pascual and Suarez take on new Australian Open champions Svetlana Kuznetsova and Alicia Molik, who are undefeated in nine career matches as a team. The Latin duo fell to Molik and another partner, Francesca Schiavone, in the first round last week in Doha. --
