2004 Wimbledon Champion to make her Philadelphia debut Philadelphia, Oct. 23, 2004 – Wimbledon Champion Maria Sharapova has entered the Advanta Championships presented by Motorola, Nov. 1-7, at the Pavilion at Villanova University, tournament officials announced today. Sharapova, currently ranked 7th in the world, will be making her debut in the Philadelphia event. She joins a field that includes Serena Williams, Jennifer Capriati, Venus Williams and hometown favorite Lisa Raymond. With the addition of Sharapova, nine of the top 20 players in the world are scheduled to compete at the Advanta Championships. Sharapova, Capriati and the Williams sisters lead a field that also includes other top 20-ranked players such as Vera Zvonareva, Nadia Petrova, Ai Sugiyama, Karolina Sprem and Alicia Molik. “This is a great opportunity for fans to see one of the brightest stars in tennis,” said Peter Fishbach, Tournament Chairman. “Maria brings an energy and excitement to the game that is very special.
