The new American strategy of providing military support to U.S.-friendly countries relied heavily on the use of American-backed PMC’s, as demonstrated by the 2018 War of the Precipice between Israel and its neighbors. This strategy had major repercussions, leading to the loss of direct influence in many parts of the world, especially South America. This in turn led to the rise of the Alianza de Sangre, a multi-national criminal drug cartel that gradually gained direct control over a large part of Mexico and Central America. The cartel funded guerrillas all across South America, starting multiple civil wars and profiting immensely from the turmoil. For these dealers the contract with the ISD was very beneficial: for their promise not to supply anyone considered to be the enemy of the ISD, the authorities tended to look the other way when it came to the means the dealers employed when “acquiring” their stock. The most successful of these dealers signed exclusive contracts with the largest private forces, making them some of the richest men and women on Earth. Despite meriting little consideration at first from the billionaires and corporations they opposed, the group persisted and soon became a global movement. A number of governments began to monitor social media and private electronic communications in order to target the suspected leaders. This, in turn, sparked more demonstrations and riots, generating further animosity and increased force on all sides. Using similar tactics to the ones they had previously employed in order to find more members, the group continued to seek out individuals who would echo and rebroadcast their message. They spoke about the villainy of the corporate state, about massive student debt in North America, chronic unemployment and under-employment, bankruptcy due to medical bills, lack of access to the health system, and the dangers of unchecked security and surveillance by a neofeudal oligarchy. While many come from poor or impoverished regions where there is little wealth to begin with, others are university-educated and fired up to change the world by whatever means necessary. As many of their members had no work, no options, and no future before turning to the PLM, it has given them a fierce sense of purpose. This desert of desolation serves as the birthplace of an armed militia born out of the survivalist, anti-government, anti-tax, anti-vaxx, paramilitary cultures of the 2000s. Originally a loose association of similar-minded groups that ran from California to Texas, they were slowly drawn in by the magnetic personality of James Todd "JT" Litteral, a US Army veteran who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and then as a private security contractor in the Middle East. Dressed in camo, they patrolled the scrublands, loaded down with radios, portable searchlights, and high-powered rifles and handguns. Litteral ’s charismatic personality and never-ending stream of war stories drew like-minded folks around him, and many saw him as a natural leader. Eventually, Litteral invited the most radical and aggressive to join him in forming an armed militia, the National Patriot Activist Army. Local citizens have had encounters ranging from unpleasant run-ins on the highway late at night, to seeing militia members storming across through their property, to being physically threatened, attacked, or even having property seized or stolen. There have been a few notable militia members accused of: conspiring to kidnap members of the government; murder; theft and robbery; and domestic terrorism offences. When the call goes out, they can often increase the number of boots on the ground by five or ten times. They don’t have the intense training, smarts, or agile response as a NATO unit, nor the discipline of Warsaw Pact militaries, and thus as a rule, their preference (or only option) is to fight as irregulars, with guerrilla warfare tactics. His definition of “illegals” has expanded to include anyone who does not fit his vision of a “patriotic American.” Simultaneously, his paranoia and fear of the government and their agents has grown in leaps and bounds. He is convinced that he and his followers must prevent America from becoming a nation of helpless cowards, taken advantage of by foreigners and illegals, or worse by a tyrannical government (that has bowed to the pressure or been bribed and sold-out to foreign interests). He considers himself a man on a mission, and no one will stop him from getting his message out.
