Ideals of literary aesthetics, in conjunction with political and socio-cultural ideologies, structured and shaped the narrative. Typical works, selected among those of high literary quality, were the war histories by Herodotos, Arrianos, Caesar, Sallust, and Livy; Froissart’s Chronique of the 14th century wars in France; and the memoirs of some 17th and 18th century military commanders.
