Our team showed the lowest profile so far this season, particularly if we compare it with their recent offensive productivity. Despite everything they could have come away with a victory and the three points but Rufete failed to score with an open goal when the visiting team seamed to have resolved themselves to following the rhythm of the final stages of the match. The best conclusions to be drawn about the leader were the solidness of the defence and the return of Angulo to the field of play. Benitez's men gained a valuable point in the league and will have to be seen in the light of the other league matches to be played. The real value will be know tomorrow but having gained a point away from Mestalla is always a good result in such a competitive league as Spain's. The match started as one would have imagined. Real Sociedad came on the field of play all fired up to save a complicated situation in terms of the Basque team's position in the league whilst our team defended themselves against the onslaught. In the second minute of play a doubtful goal by Kovacevic was annulled was a warning of things to come and Denoueix's team kept up the pressure until halfway through the first half. This really was the same revelation team that we saw last season, the European competition's effect on their fitness forgotten and focussed on knocking the league leaders off their perch. Halfway through the first half Benitez's men shook off their lethargy and they started to put on a show. A good combination between Rufete, Oliveira and Aimar was picked up in the heart of the area by Vicente who connects well with his right foot but sends it high. In the second half Marchena, having adopted the pivot position, was freer in attack and had the best scoring opportunity for Valencia up till then. It was a shame they did not take advantage of this opportunity nor did they provoke any more offensive play. Real Sociedad instead of falling apart put more effort into their attacking game. Kovacevic and more so the recently fielded Nihat had everything going for them to put their team ahead. Providential, Canizares, Ayala, Pellegrino and Curro Torres when the crowd cheered a goal. Angulo's appearance on the pitch was the best news of the match. After a seven month absence the Asturian joined the forwards. His desire to get back into the run of things was not lost as his colleagues made the most of his tremendous efforts. He was tireless in putting on the pressure and in counterattacks making him the main offensive argument of the team. This panorama was the backdrop to the key piece of play of the whole match. Rufete saves the offside, dribbles past Westerveld and with an empty goal and completely alone and everything in his favour shoots and the ball goes wide. After that the Valencian team seamed to accept the fact that they just have to maintain the result. Luckily Real Sociedad suffered from the strains of the match and did not seam to be able to get to their opponents area. Finally a draw that made our team happier than the home team.
