This applies mainly to Emperor penguins as Adelies wanders in not
particularly organised groups when going between the shore and their nests.
Basically they just follow the leader, an older penguin who knows the way for
their hundred of km treks. Some lines can have as much as 3000 penguins in a
single file. How do they find the way ? I have no idea. Do they get lost ?
Maybe, but they don't tell anyone.
