They have another potential star in the frontcourt in power forward Derrick Favors, who is only 23 but has begun to expand his offensive game, adding shooting to match his athleticism. He is under contract for three more years at $35 million. The recently play of rookie shooting guard Rodney Hood (11.9 points, 41.9 percent shooting from the 3-point line since the All-Star break) has shown he will have a place in the team’s rotation going forward. Talks about an extension last offseason never got close to serious, and there was long-simmering tension between Kanter and the organization. Losing Kanter might have been addition by subtraction, then. “It may not look like a good deal,” one front-office executive said, “but it was obvious to all of us they had to get rid of him. They have two future picks on the books, including the Warriors’ pick in 2017 and the Thunder’s future first-rounder (which probably will come in 2018). It is unlikely that Utah, with a pick in the 12-13 range, will find an instant answer to its backcourt issue in a draft short on guards and shooters. The most gaping hole is experience — no one on the roster has been in the league more than five years.
