Wolves haven't developed culture of winning so far
时间Sat Jan 27 02:49:17 2007
: The point guard was a little irritated, and didn't mind venting in a public
: way, all the better to put the challenge to himself and to his teammates.
: "We haven't played well lately," he said. "We haven't been as professional as
: we need to be. We haven't had a sense of urgency. We've acted like it's just
: going to happen for us. That's not good enough."
: Mike James? Randy Foye? Uh, no, not a Timberwolf. Let's continue:
: "Our aspirations are to be the best team out there," the playmaker said, "and
: we haven't played like the best team, regardless of the wins and losses."
: Enough guessing. It was Steve Nash talking, the two-time NBA Most Valuable
: Player. At the time he spoke, after a shootaround before the Wolves' game at
: Phoenix, the Suns were on a 12-game winning streak.
: That night they made it 13. And here was Nash, picking nits.
: Nits to some, anyway. The sign of a leader to others, from a highly evolved
: team, with what can best be described as a winning culture.
: It's almost a foreign language to many NBA teams, the notion that decisions
: would get made with only one bottom line -- winning or losing -- in mind. Yet
: it's as real to those who've known it and believe in it as it is elusive.
: "I totally believe that. Absolutely," new Wolves coach Randy Wittman said
: Thursday, after a practice at KeyArena. "Sometimes it's hard [to get],
: sometimes not. The acceptance of players, and their character and how they
: look at themselves, as well as all of us asking, 'What could I have done
: better?' That's the first thing I look at when I wake up in the morning.
: Players have to do that same thing if you're going to develop a winning
: culture."Now, if it's 'I didn't do anything wrong' or 'It's his fault,'
: that's a losing culture."
: Forward Mark Madsen, who was a part of two NBA championship teams with the
: L.A. Lakers (2001, 2002), echoed Wittman's view. "It's so important. You've
: got to create something where, when you lose, people are upset," Madsen said.
: "When you lose, people are asking themselves all night long, 'What went
: wrong?' Players, coaches, everybody. That's what we've had in L.A."
: In Minnesota, what folks have heard all too often have been familiar refrains
: about being "a work in progress" or "coming together" or "the process." For
: at least a season and a half.
: Wittman, trying to set the right tone a day after the 101-98 overtime loss at
: Portland, again preached accountability to his crew. "All you can do is what
: I've asked you to do," he has said, several times, since being named Tuesday
: to replace Dwane Casey. "You have no control of what I've asked [the other
: man] to do, so you shouldn't worry about what he's doing. Just do your job.'
: I think that's how you develop guys being accountable."
: But Wittman, like Casey before him, might be working with flawed materials.
: Building a winning culture would seem to get much tougher if everything in
: the parts bin was used to losing.
: Only three members of Minnesota's active roster have played on teams with
: cumulative winning records. Madsen (105 games over .500), Kevin Garnett (plus
: 77) and Troy Hudson (plus 3) have won more than they've lost, based on their
: various teams' W-L marks in the seasons they were around.
: The rest of the Wolves all are sub-.500, from Marko Jaric (minus -79) and
: Ricky Davis (minus-67) to Mike James (minus-57) and Mark Blount (minus-55).
: Usually, only head coaches get so obviously and permanently evaluated as a
: won-lost record. But players have more control over the outcome of a game
: than a coach. And for those who haven't had it better, there is a lot of
: losing un-learning to be done.
: "Everybody you coach, there's a different minimum standard," Utah coach Jerry
: Sloan said. "Maybe they didn't have enough support to learn how to play
: together and not be the star, where somebody else takes that role over and
: then you play to that.
: "You don't know sometimes until you get guys. We can do all of the guesswork
: in the world, and there's no scientist or genius in this business who can
: tell you. . . . We try to put a good group of guys together and play a
: certain way, and hopefully winning is what they're interested in. They'll all
: tell you that."
: We don't want to go completely Christian Laettner on this (Laettner once
: famously pointed to the nameplates above the Wolves' dressing stalls and, one
: by one, pronounced, "Loser . . . loser . . . loser . . . loser" until
: pointing to his own and saying, "Winner"). No one ever has stocked a roster
: with all past winners. Guys have to learn sometimes. And almost every team
: that wins drags someone along who hasn't. Jaric came up with the Clippers.
: Davis bounced from shaky club to shaky club. Ditto for James.
: Some players are more fortunate. Madsen was drafted by the league's defending
: champions, whereas Trenton Hassell went to Chicago three years after Michael
: Jordan left. Some guys won in college, which might help, although learning at
: the NBA level is the key.
: "It's a hard thing [to fight losing] in an 82-game schedule," Wittman said.
: "It's a little easier when you play 30 games in college, when you're playing
: once or twice a week. It's easy to fall into a losing streak or you play with
: losing teams for a number of years. But I can't allow that."
: Each of Minnesota's past three seasons has been ruptured either by a coach's
: firing (Flip Saunders in 2005, Casey this week) or by a roster-rattling trade
: (Wolves-Celtics in 2006). That doesn't help. In fact, it offers easy excuses
: outside of a player's accountability.
: When will these Wolves start to get it? When they hold themselves to a higher
: standard, like Nash. When they police each other the way John Stockton and
: Karl Malone did with Jazz teammates under Sloan. When they put the group
: before the individuals ... and don't wait for another coach to get fired.
: "You see it in the way they react with one another on the floor," Wittman
: said. "Are they helping one another? Away from the floor, there's not a lot
: of teams anymore that have eight or nine guys hang out on the road together
: or go to dinner. But on the floor, you see it."
