: Randy Wittman was grateful, on his first full day as the Timberwolves head
: coach, that he knew what was needed to slow down the game.
: Slowing down time was a little trickier.
: From the moment Tuesday afternoon when Wittman was named to replace fired
: coach Dwane Casey, to when he sat down 18 inches to the right of his usual
: seat on the team's bench Wednesday night for Minnesota's game at Portland,
: his life had been a whirlwind of news, questions, phone calls, decisions,
: meetings, explanations and preparation. He was worried about throwing too
: much too soon at the players, wary that heavy strategies and expectations
: might overwhelm them coming all at once.
: "It's hard," Wittman said shortly after Portland edged the Wolves 101-98 in
: overtime. "One day of practice to really execute. That will get better. [With
: only] 24 hours to pick up some of what I asked them to pick up, I thought
: they did a great job."
: But for most of the day, nobody was doing much to brake everything heading at
: Wittman, a Wolves assistant for nine of the past 12 seasons and their head
: coach overnight.
: "It hasn't felt like 24 hours. It's gone by pretty fast," he said after the
: team's shootaround at the Rose Garden, about seven hours before game time --
: a game the Wolves lost 101-98 to the Trail Blazers in overtime. "Everything's
: kind of happened. Then you try to prioritize things I want to get changed for
: [Portland], without flooding these guys' heads with too much."
: That pushed Tuesday into Wednesday. "Before I knew it, it was 1 or 2 o'clock
: in the morning, and here we are again," Wittman said.
: The change in Wittman's job description came as suddenly as the word of
: Casey's firing, two days into a weeklong West Coast trip. One second he was
: preparing for Portland and working to end a four-game losing streak. The
: next, he was preparing for Portland, preparing to end a four-game losing
: streak and putting his own NBA coaching record on the line.
: That record, a 62-102 mark from two years in Cleveland (1999-2001), wasn't as
: good as the team he took over (20-20). It wasn't as good as Casey's, either
: (53-69). But he and the Wolves are banking on Wittman being seven years
: older, seven years wiser and far more ready a second time around.
: "If I hadn't done it before, I'd be [extremely tight] right now," he said as
: tipoff drew near. "That's helped me. I don't have the anxiety that, going
: into the first game I coached in Cleveland, I know that you have.
: "You have now a sense of what can happen in a game to you and how fast it can
: happen. That was the main thing the first time around: When I was sitting as
: an assistant, the game looked slow, and now it's 100 miles an hour. I don't
: think it will be 100 miles an hour for me now."
: Just 100 tasks and responsibilities. Wittman caught a break in the timing of
: his promotion because he had been the assistant in charge of scouting
: Portland. "I should know every call without having to turn and ask, 'What's
: coming up?' " he said.
: For now, he will stick with Bob Ociepka and Rex Kalamian as his help on the
: bench, perhaps adding another staffer later.
: The game itself? Like riding a bike, apparently. With three referees, 19,000
: screaming people and five guys trying to knock you off.
: "Fourteen years as a coach and nine as a player in this league, you get an
: understanding of ... how you want to run [a game]," he said. "I feel very
: confident that I'm ready to step right back in."
: That only leaves everything else, from personnel to practices to public
: relations. But mostly, personnel.
: The Cliff Notes version of Wittman's time in Cleveland cites the chronic foot
: injuries of center Zydrunas Ilgauskas as the reason for his failure. Within
: that, though, there was friction with a number of players. More emotional
: then and sometimes stubborn, Wittman was said to have chafed with Cedric
: Henderson, Wesley Person, Robert Traylor, Jim Jackson and Shawn Kemp at his
: most bloated. Lamond Murray was a daily migraine and ... well, just looking
: at those names might explain many of the Cavaliers' problems then.
: His best Cavs player, other than the unavailable Ilgauskas? Probably guard
: Andre Miller, in his first two seasons. Now he's got Kevin Garnett, like
: trading in all those Fords for a Ferrari.
Ilgauskas?
: "I think Randy would tell you things to get you going and what we say 'keep
: it all the way real,' " Garnett said. "Sometimes players need that. Randy's
: real straightforward, not in a negative way. He's very good at getting you to
: recognize when something's wrong, if you don't want to recognize it yourself.
: That's A to Z, myself all the way through the rookies."
: Still, as in Cleveland, Wittman will have issues. The evenness of talent on
: the Wolves' roster, perhaps, and the mediocrity of results has rankled a few
: players eager for bigger roles. For example, Marko Jaric still was wary
: Wednesday of his spot and future with the team.
: "At least somebody else, a new person, is in the coaching job," Jaric said.
: "So you say, 'I might -- I might -- get a chance.' We'll see. I am
: open-minded and I am ready. But I've learned so far that I can't trust
: anybody. Everybody's saying how much they love you, how much they need you. I
: say, you know what, show me how much you love me. So we'll see."
: So is Wittman bringing fresh eyes to this roster now, or trusting his old
: ones? "They've still got to go out and prove to me that they're worthy of
: more minutes or they're worthy of starting," he said. "It's my job to get
: them into better position to take advantage of their talent."
: Wednesday night, it almost felt as if Casey had been ejected at 11:59 of the
: first quarter, Wittman simply taking over. But in time, he figures to make
: the team his own.
: In only the first 24 hours, Wittman spoke to each player, to his face and in
: front of the group, about what the team needs and expects from him. "My main
: thing is, worry about yourself. If we get five guys on the floor doing their
: jobs, that's what makes a team," he said.
: Actually, it takes six, counting the guy in the suit
