The Sixers completed the paperwork to buy out power forward Chris Webber's contract Wednesday night, and they plan to place him on waivers today. The Wolves could use another capable big man. Webber, 34, has been hampered by foot and ankle injuries much of the season, but Wolves star Kevin Garnett, for one, believes Webber still has plenty of life left in his all-star NBA career. "Absolutely. Absolutely," said Garnett, who embraced the idea of acquiring Webber. "Anybody that can hep us going forward, reaching our goals and trying to win this thing, so be it. Nothing less than that." Vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale didn't rule out the possibility when asked about the team's interest. "We'll see," he said. Coach Dwane Casey wouldn't address whether he would like to add Webber but seemed to believe Webber could still help somebody. "He still has some juice," Casey said. "He still knows how to play." Webber had career averages of 21.6 points and 10.1 rebounds entering this season. Beyond Garnett and the resurgent Mark Blount, the quality of the Wolves' experienced big men drops off quickly. Marko uh-oh: In his third game back after suffering a sprained right thumb at New Jersey on Dec. 30, Wolves guard Marko Jaric reinjured the thumb early in the second quarter Wednesday night. After coming off the bench and playing only three minutes, he left the court, holding the hand in obvious pain. He did not return. Jaric was playing for the first time since the injury without the protective soft brace he had worn the previous two games. Lame highlight reel of the season: Between the first and second quarters of Wednesday's game, the Wolves celebrated their string of three straight overtime victories with a dramatic highlight show on the scoreboard video screen — accompanied by the inspiring theme music from the movie "Rudy." Conspicuously absent from the show was footage of the Wolves blowing substantial second-half leads in all three games. McCants can't-do? Injured guard Rashad McCants, who has been out all season since undergoing microfracture surgery on his right knee in June, could have his anticipated January return delayed, in part because the team's heavy game schedule this month limits the practice time he'll have to get back into game shape. "The key thing is you don't want to rush him back," Casey said of the second-year player who has begun practicing with the team in recent weeks. "He'll work hard one day, and he's sore the next. It's kind of an up-and-down thing." Briefly: With the Wolves in the heavy workload part of their game schedule, Casey said he is trying to limit the playing time of some of his regulars, particularly Garnett, to 36 to 38 minutes per game. Three straight overtime games exacerbated the issue. Garnett said he feels fine and feels more refreshed this season, Casey's second as coach.
