: MINNEAPOLIS - Wally Szczerbiak wasn't sure he wanted to come back to
: the Minnesota Timberwolves.
: Relegated to a sixth man last season, Szczerbiak expressed frustration
: with how he was being used and said he would rather be traded than spend
: another season coming off the bench in Minnesota.
: "I was an All-Star in this league and it seemed like some people forgot
: that for whatever reason," Szczerbiak said this week as the Timberwolves
: opened training camp.
: With a new coach who has pledged to lean on him heavily, Szczerbiak
: couldn't be happier to be back in a Timberwolves' uniform.
: "It's a whole new regime, I've only been coached under one coach," said
: Szczerbiak, who spent his first 5 1/2 seasons under Flip Saunders. "I was
: a little disappointed with my role last year and I made that kind of known.
: I regret it a little bit for saying it, especially with the way things
: turned. The way now the new coaching staff embraces me, that's all I've
: ever wanted."
: After a monumentally disappointing season that saw the Timberwolves
: tumble from 2004 Western Conference finalists to missing the playoffs
: in 2005, the team pledged to shake things up.
: Many thought that meant trading Szczerbiak, who has always shot the
: ball well but has battled injuries for much of his career.
: Instead, the Wolves dumped aging and disgruntled veterans Sam Cassell
: and Latrell Sprewell, opting to build around Kevin Garnett in the post
: and Szczerbiak on the perimeter.
Latrell Sprewell,
: "A lot of teams called and inquired about Wally. Myself, personally,
: I was dead adamant against moving Wally Szczerbiak," coach Dwane Casey
: said. "I think Wally's one of the best shooters in the league. Does he
: have deficiencies? Yes, we all do. But what he does for us is invaluable."
: And with guard Fred Hoiberg, who led the NBA in 3-point shooting last
: season, out for the year after having heart surgery in the offseason,
: Szczerbiak's abilities have never been more needed.
Szczerbiak
: In each year he has been healthy, Szczerbiak has shot over 50 percent
: from the field and he has also hit over 42 percent of his 3-pointers in
: three of the last four seasons.
Szczerbiak
: "That's why I didn't want to lose Wally, especially losing Fred Hoiberg,"
: Casey said. "You can't negate the fact that Wally's our next best 3-point
: shooter."
: Toward the end of Saunders' tenure in Minnesota, that kind of praise
: was rare to come Szczerbiak's way. Even when vice president of basketball
: operations Kevin McHale took over for Saunders in midseason, Szczerbiak
: remained on the bench as McHale continued to favor of Sprewell and Trenton
: Hassell, who were better defenders.
Szczerbiak
: "I just tried to show the team that I was healthy last year and I was
: capable of what I was capable of a couple of years ago before the
: injury," said Szczerbiak, who played in just 80 games from 2002-04 with
: foot problems. "I want more put on my shoulders and I have to step up
: to the plate."
: His good buddy Hoiberg already notices a difference in Szczerbiak's
: demeanor.
: "I know he's excited. He's going to be the No. 1 option on the perimeter
: this year. Last year, he was sometimes the third option," said Hoiberg,
: who is helping the coaching staff while he sits out this year. "He wants
: that extra pressure on himself, he wants to carry more of the load."
: Now it's up to Szczerbiak to prove Casey's faith is not misguided.
: He'll have more opportunities than ever to show that he is the player
: that averaged 18.7 points and shot 45 percent from 3-point range in his
: All-Star season of 2001-02.
: "I've worked hard, I've tried to earn that type of respect, now I just
: have to show I deserve it," Szczerbiak said.
: With so many new faces, including the coaching staff, veterans Marko Jaric
: and Nikoloz Tskitishvili and rookies Rashad McCants and Bracey Wright,
: Szczerbiak will be relied upon to help Garnett be a leader as well.
Marko Jaric
: "We made wholesale changes. A whole new coaching staff," Szczerbiak said.
: "It's a fresh start for pretty much everyone. We had to get younger.
: We lost Sam and Spree. They were great players, All Stars in this league,
: so we have to find a way to make up for those guys. I think we're going to do
: it with hard work and playing our roles."
: And for the first time in a long time, Szczerbiak is happy with his.
