Three (2001, 2002, 2004) were forfeited as part of the Joe Smith penalties, and the Wolves traded their 2000 first-rounder in a January 1999 deal with Toronto and Denver. Over the past 22 years, eight other NBA teams have sat out the first round at least three times in a span of five years. Here is a look at those teams, how they fared (based on a seven-year horizon) and what they did with some of those picks: Picks skipped *Record Pct. CLEVELAND '90, '92, '94 323-251 .563 Notes: Picks in 1990 and 1992 were traded with Ron Harper to the L.A. Clippers for Reggie Williams and the rights to Danny Ferry, November 1989. DALLAS '99, '01, '02, '04 262-148 .639 Notes: Turned the 1999 pick (along with three bit players) into Steve Nash in a June 1998 trade with Phoenix. Packaged 2004 pick in trade for Boston's Antoine Walker in October. DETROIT '87, '88, '91 334-240 .582 Notes: In separate trades, dealt the 1987 and 1988 picks for Kurt Nimphius and William Bedford. HOUSTON '94, '95, '96 303-229 .559 Notes: The 1995 pick helped the Rockets land Clyde Drexler for the second of their two NBA title teams. MIAMI '96, '98, '00, '01 312-230 .576 Notes: Used the 1996 pick to acquire Alonzo Mourning. Gave up the 1998 pick in a trade for Brent Barry. PHOENIX '97, '98, '01 296-246 .546 Notes: Traded 1998 pick, with two players, in a major deal for Antonio McDyess, only to lose McDyess to free agency after one season. SEATTLE '82, '84, '86 282-292 .491 Notes: The Sonics' 1986 pick, traded to Boston for Gerald Henderson, turned into Len Bias, who died less than 48 hours after the Celtics selected him No. 2 overall.
