There's no rest for Wolves' Big Three
BY MIKE WELLS
Pioneer Press
It was a move that left many inside the Target Center scratching their heads,
and some questioning Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders' decision.
The Wolves had what appeared to be a comfortable 20-point lead with 4:53
remaining in Thursday night's game against Portland. Kevin Garnett was on the
bench wearing his warm-up top and a towel on his head. Sam Cassell had his
long sleeve T-shirt on. The only guy missing was fellow Big Three member
Latrell Sprewell.
Instead of bringing Sprewell out to a standing ovation and clearing his bench
for the final minutes, Saunders put Garnett and Cassell back in the game.
To Saunders, it was simply ensuring that his team would win its seventh
straight home game. It also showed the value of the Big Three; having at
least one of them on the court brings stability. Having two of them out there
forces teams to decide which player to focus on. Having all three out there
means they're going to account for 66 percent of the team's points and give
the Wolves the best chance to win.
Saunders believes that for the Wolves to be successful while three of his top
six players are out with injures, he needs to keep at least one of his Big
Three on the court at all times.
"The players you have are role-type players," he said. "They're playing off
main people. And if you don't have a main person, they can't be effective.
You're trying to get all those guys to play to their strengths."
The importance of the Big Three is even more evident by their plus/minus
ratings — which rates a player based on how many points a team scores and
gives up while he is on the floor. Garnett (+254), Cassell (+226) and
Sprewell (+225) are the Wolves' clear-cut leaders in that category. Next
closest is Trenton Hassell (+165).
The Big Three are the only players to have led the Wolves in scoring this
season. Hassell is the only other player to lead them in assists. Gary Trent
and Michael Olowokandi are the only ones to accomplish the feat rebounding.
Saunders plans to keep Garnett, Sprewell or Cassell on the court at all times,
even when Wally Szczerbiak, Troy Hudson and Olowokandi return from injures.
"When L.A. plays, either Shaq(uille O'Neal) or Kobe (Bryant) are going to be
on the court at all times," Saunders said. "If the offense breaks down,
someone has the ability to create a shot."
After going through most of his career helping average players play with
confidence, Garnett relishes only having to be in that situation four or five
minutes a game. His mindset on the court changes, also. Instead of looking for
his shot early, Garnett tries to get players like Fred Hoiberg and Trent into
the offense so opposing defenses can't double- or triple-team him.
"That helps their confidence, helps their energy level," Garnett said. "So
when I come in and he leaves me in there, the first thing is to get Freddie a
couple of shots. If we hadn't had a bucket, I'm going go to make the defense
respond to me. I've found ways to keep the offense running. I haven't always
played with this great group of personnel we have here.
"I know what it's like to have four sort of regular guys and to get them to
believe in themselves to where they play above average. That's the mindset
when I come in with those guys. Freddie's one of the best shooters in the
league, so I have to make sure he understands that every night. If I can get
him to get a couple buckets and get him going, now they have to pay attention
to Freddie. Once I get that, it's a wrap because that's one more person they
have to pay attention to."
Sprewell usually plays the most without his two running mates, and responds
best to the situation. Sprewell, who can play more minutes than Cassell and
just as many as Garnett, can play point guard, hit a big basket and also
clamp down on defense if need be.
"That's when he kind of takes games over at that point," Saunders said. "I
think when he doesn't play as many minutes, he loses some of his rhythm."
"I always want to be on the court, no matter who's out there," Sprewell said.
"Whatever I have to do. If those guys are out there, fine. If not, I have to
be more aggressive because guys are going to look for me to do more."
