The first level? Kyle Singler, serving as his primary defender. The second level? Enes Kanter, a slow-motion big tasked with both boxing out the relentless Tristan Thompson and rotating over to help should LeBron drive. Ask for trouble and trouble will come. Flanked alongside LeBron, Kevin Love hit the first shot, a pump-fake 3-pointer from the wing 44 seconds into the quarter. LeBron assisted the make and Nick Collison tacked on with a foul. Four points in a flash. Dion Waiters airballed a 20-foot stepback moments later, which fell into Love's hands. He fired an outlet to LeBron, who barreled through D.J. Augustin for a dunk and another foul. Seven points in 67 seconds. Then Kanter missed a hook shot, Thompson gathered the rebound and LeBron created a pair of open looks for Cleveland, the second resulting in a completed lob to Richard Jefferson. Nine points in 98 seconds — a predictable 9-0 run considering the team's differing lineups — flipping the Thunder's four-point lead into a five-point deficit. Coach Billy Donovan called timeout and reinserted Russell Westbrook. But the damage was done. In an eventual four-point loss, the game had changed with the Thunder's franchise pillars — Westbrook and Kevin Durant — on the bench. “The fourth quarter doesn't start off so well, we dig ourselves a hole and we have to fight back,” Durant said. “We gotta be better. We gotta start quarters better.” Early in his coaching tenure, Donovan has rarely staggered the minutes of his two stars. Durant and Westbrook sometimes sit separately. But they often sit together, typically alongside the other three starters and usually to begin the second and fourth quarters. Per Stats LLC, the Thunder has played 175 minutes this season with all reserves on the floor — the fourth-most in the league behind only the Timberwolves, Knicks and Clippers. Donovan goes to it far more than teams that are far less top-heavy. And the results haven't been pretty. As a team, the Thunder has scored 107.7 points per 100 possessions and given up 99.9. That's a 7.9 net rating, third best in the NBA behind only the Warriors and Spurs. With both its stars on the court, that net rating jumps to 14.7. With just Westbrook, it's a solid 7.6. With just Durant, it drops to minus-0.6. But take both of them off the court and, unsurprisingly, it plummets to minus-7.1. That's a mark worse than every team in the league besides the Lakers and Sixers. It wouldn't be as concerning if Donovan didn't go to those units much. But he does. The Thunder's third and fourth most used lineups don't include any starters. So why? Why doesn't he stagger Durant and Westbrook more? Why does he insist on playing the reserve group through such deep struggles? “It's something that we'll definitely look into and evolve into,” Donovan said of staggering earlier this month. “I'm aware of those (bad) numbers. But at the same point, too, getting some consistency off our bench is important in terms of the long run.” But the real bonus has been more bench time for Durant and Westbrook. Two seasons ago, Westbrook had three surgeries on his knee. Last season, Durant had three on his foot. Minute monitoring has become more important, especially with a playoff run on the horizon. Westbrook is at 34.4 minutes per night, down from earlier in his career. Durant is at 35.7, way below his career average. KD has led the league in minutes played three times. Right now, neither is top-10. So if you reduce court time, you increase the likelihood neither will be playing for pockets of the game, especially since both have always preferred only one break per half. Sometimes, it makes sense. But sometimes, it doesn't. Thursday night is a good example. Durant came out at the end of the third quarter. At the time, Westbrook had only played 24 minutes. He could've returned for the entire fourth and still only hit 36 for the night. It seemed worth it, extending him a bit past his average to protect a tenuous lead and chase a big road win. But instead, he sat an extra 100 seconds, alongside Durant. It proved to be the most important 100 seconds of the game. --
