The clock continues to tick toward Friday’s deadline for the Thunder to come
to terms on a contract extension for guard Reggie Jackson. But as the
deadline nears, a deal appears unlikely to get done and talks will have to
resume next summer when Jackson becomes a restricted free agent.

The Thunder can match any offer Jackson might receive next summer, and
Thunder general manager Sam Presti repeatedly has made it clear that the
franchise intends to keep Jackson.
But the price tag could be going up.
Phoenix guard Eric Bledsoe fetched a $14 million annual salary over five
years from the Suns just before the start of training camp. Charlotte guard
Kemba Walker received a $12 million annual salary over four years from the
Bobcats on Tuesday. Minnesota point guard Ricky Rubio could be next in line
for an eight-figure annual salary, and Milwaukee guard Brandon Knight is
seeking a deal in the same neighborhood.
As a talent Jackson is widely viewed as being on par with those players or,
in some cases better, and their contracts are likely to be used by Jackson’s
representatives as barometers in negotiations with the Thunder.
Oklahoma City historically reaches agreements with players on rookie
extensions. Jeff Green and James Harden are the two biggest exceptions. Both
were traded before making it to restricted free agency. But in 2009, the
Thunder and Thabo Sefolosha came to an 11th hour agreement on an extension
that kept him with the franchise through the end of last season.
