Didn’t really see that one coming. The team announced late Saturday that Jackson has been assigned to OKC’s D-League affiliate, joining Orton and Lamb. Perry Jones III remains with the Thunder because he suffered an ankle injury a few nights ago with the 66ers, and isn’t ready to play. Jackson was in an open competition with Eric Maynor for backup point guard minutes during training camp, but the Thunder have gone with Maynor exclusively, resisting to give Jackson time despite some struggles from Maynor. Here’s my speculation: This assignment isn’t a sign of the Thunder’s commitment to Maynor as their backup, but more an effort to give Jackson a little tuning, as well an opportunity to impress to make another run at getting minutes with OKC. Jackson will be in uniform for the 66ers tonight in Tulsa against Rio Grande Valley. But expect Jackson to be recalled Sunday for the Pacers game. This is a chance to get him a little time, and maybe a chance to let him make an impression. If you haven’t figured it out by now, this is how the Thunder uses their D-League team. Send players up and down, let them practice in OKC, let them play in Tulsa. It’s wise. It’s… very Thunder.
