Southwest College例行的pickup game中 突然虚脱晕了过去。不久之後，Centinela Hospital Medical Center宣布了Barrs已经离 开人世了。(他有心脏胀大的问题) Barrs在礼拜二过世，过了四天之後在Grace United Methodist Church办葬礼。RUSS这时 应该要街上跟Barrs打篮球，却得参加他好朋友的葬礼。 RUSS不只在场上加倍努力，像是两个人在打球一样，在场下也做两份家务事。他每周都会 帮忙住在对街的Barrs的祖母倒垃圾，就跟Khelcey一样。 转眼间RUSS长大成人，变成6尺2寸的热门PG，各校奖学金的Offer接踵而来。最後RUSS挑了 原先看上Barrs而没有看上RUSS的UCLA。 RUSS:"I feel like I'm playing for him in a way. We were playing pickup basketball one day and he just stopped and fell and out of nowhere and that was it. I always think about him and his family and I Wonder how they're doing and check on them any chance I get." RUSS一直都是一位很努力的球员，但是Barrs的事情触动了他心中的那把火，烧得更加的 猛烈了。他亲眼见到生命在一瞬间就会消逝。而他再也不要对於自己的能力产生质疑，他 想要成为这个星球上最厉害的PG。这对於这个小孩来说是一个遥不可及的梦想，更何况他 在高三前的暑假才接到第一个大学的徵召，而且在高三的中间才终於灌到篮的小孩。不过 当有任何人质疑RUSS时，他只会有很简单的回应: "Why not?" "It's how I think, It's how I play and go about things. I say why not to everything." +++ Sam Presti也一定会很想用这个座右铭。在零八年的选秀会上他竟然用第四顺位挑RUSS。 此举招来许多质疑声浪，大家希望他挑Brook Lopez，或者是已经稍微养起来的後卫也好， 而不是在UCLA两季以来每场平均仅有8.3分的RUSS。不过Presti知道自己在干嘛，当他问 大家谁最难对付，大家的共识是RUSS。 RUSS在防守端的韧性和mid-range game都是在水泥地的Ross Snyder Park中看着他的爸爸 ，Russell Westbrook Sr.打pick up game所学到的。而後来他们搬到南方十五理处的 Hawthorne之後RUSS才有了专属的球场，在那边可以跟爸爸花几小时努力的练习，就像是 在学校练习一样那麽努力。 "The cotton shot." Westbrook Sr.说道。 "You know about the cotton shot? From the 15-20 feet range is the cotton shot. I'm supposed to hit that shot. That's my mid-range game." Westbrook Jr.这麽说。 Sr. : "If he had practice from 7 to 9 p.m., we would go shoot 9 to 11 p.m., We would shoot for hours and it was that extra effort that got him to where he's at. It's something he wanted to do. I remember one Christmas he caught me off-guard and said, 'Dad, let's go shoot.' He would want to shoot right after we got home from church, too. That's all he wanted to do." 他的爸爸会让他进行投篮练习，每次都得投个500球以上，如果在特定的点没有连续进三颗 球还得加重练习。 虽然说RUSS的还不断的练习 "cotton shot"还不断的演出令人赞叹的灌篮，仍有许多议题 围绕在他在访谈时防卫心很重。 UCLA教练Reggie Morris:"Very few people take it personally when the guy they're guarding scores, If you ever watch Russell when his guy scores, it's like a direct slap in the face. You can see his whole demeanor kind of change. He gets upset and he takes it personally when people score on him. He never takes a play off, and that's why he's so hard to score against." --- RUSS在Barrs过世後的努力态度几乎没有变，他总是第一个到场练习，而且是最後一个走 的。 RUSS: "I've always had to prove myself to people growing up, I had to show them that I could do this and I could do that and paying no mind to what the critics said. Just go in every day and work hard when other people are not." 很快的，RUSS证明他值得拿下第四顺位。 "I remember everything that happened to me, Sitting on the bench in high school , sitting on the bench in college; I remember all that. I'll never forget that and that's what pushes me now to work hard and continue to outwork everyone else every day." 每当RUSS低头看看自己的手，他就会想起他不是只为了自己打球。他希望当你看到他灌篮 时，你也能看见KB3(Barrs的背号是三号)也在那里。 ====== RUSS: "He was my best friend. He lived across the street from me and we were together all the time. When he passed, it just made me think about life and how every time I step on the floor I have to give it my all because every time he played he gave 100 percent. You can't take life for granted.
