After missing six of the last 12 games due to various incidents - two via league suspension for tossing a chair, four more while tending to his ill grandmother in Pittsburgh - Fortson found a new, creative way to miss Friday's game versus the Chicago Bulls. During Thursday's practice, the pigtailed post punisher got into a heated debate with officials during an intra-squad scrimmage. Upset with a call made by a referee hired to officiate practice games, Fortson tore a strip into the zebra before coach Nate McMillan intervened. Uh-oh. Known for his relentless, "take no prisoners" attitude on the floor, Fortson stayed true to form as McMillan attempted to restore order to the scrimmage. Words were exchanged; many being of the heated variety. Given the recent string of bad luck surrounding Fortson and his recent drop in play and production - he's averaging just 5.1ppg and 4.9rpg over the last 24 games - one could see such an outburst coming from a mile away. The Sonics were in the midst of a two-game losing streak (which would be extended to three after the 100-97 loss to Chicago) and McMillan was frustrated after dropping games to Western Conference elites in Houston and Phoenix. The result was formulaic - coach and player jawing at one another for far too long - long enough to turn a heat-of-the-moment squabble into a full-fledged war of words. The prolonged argument eventually got Fortson tossed from the practice floor, and scratched from the Sonics' lineup for the Chicago game. Informed during the Friday morning shootaround of his benching, Fortson refused to speak with media regarding the incident. Fortson returned to the lineup on Sunday versus the Knicks, and quickly re- established the ruggedness and temperament that has made him one of the NBA's most prominent agitators. In 18 minutes of action, Fortson posted six points and six fouls, including a technical after being disqualified with 4:31 left in the contest.
