US reports first swine flu death
A 23-month-old child in Texas is the first person known to
have died of swine flu outside Mexico, where it may have
killed as many as 159 people.
Officials in Washington gave no other details of the patient
- one of 64 cases of infection with the virus.
Germany and Austria have detected their first cases of the
virus and the UK and Spain have confirmed new cases.
The UN's World Health Organisation has called a meeting of
scientific experts to discuss the nature of the outbreak.
Earlier, it confirmed that the flu was being transmitted
between humans and called on countries to check their contingency
plans for a possible pandemic.
But the WHO also urged caution, saying measures like travel
bans were unlikely to prove effective.
France will ask the European Union on Thursday to suspend all
flights going to Mexico because of the flu outbreak, Health
Minister Roselyne Bachelot said.
She said the request would be made at a meeting of the 27 EU
health ministers, due to be held in Luxembourg.
Visits to Mexico
The death in Texas, which borders Mexico, was confirmed by
Dr Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention.
"Unfortunately this morning I do have to confirm that we have
the first death of a child from H1N1 flu virus," he told US
TV channel CBS.
"And this is in Texas, a 23-month-old child."
No details were given of how the child may have contracted the
virus or of the child's nationality.
Germany's Robert Koch Institute, responsible for disease control
and prevention, reported three cases: a 22-year-old woman in Hamburg,
and a 37-year-old woman and a man in his late 30s in separate
hospitals in Bavaria.
All three recently returned from Mexico, officials said.
Austria confirmed that a 28-year-old woman who had returned from
a trip to Mexico had contracted the virus but was "on the way to
recovery".
In the UK, Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced three new cases,
on top of two previously reported in Scotland: a girl of 12 in the
south-west English town of Paignton, and a case each in London and
Birmingham.
He told parliament all three were receiving antiviral drugs and
were responding well to treatment.
"All of them have travelled recently from Mexico," he added. "All
of them have mild symptoms."
In Spain, the number of confirmed cases doubled to four on Wednesday.
Again, all four had visited Mexico.
