These teas, which can fetch Rs 7,000 - Rs 15,000 per kg in the international market will be sold at high-street departmental stores like Harrods. A team from Harrods is now in Kolkata to hold talks with Andrew Yule for sourcing these exclusive designer teas for their store in London. On Wednesday, the company launched three new teas from its Darjeeling tea estate, Mim-Himalayan Delite (Darjeeling organic green tea), Mim Darjeeling organic tea and Mim Darjeeling speciality designer teas. The launch of these teas is part of the company’s plan to focus on high-end customers to enhance the turnover of its tea division. In 2009-10, the tea division has generated a revenue of Rs 135 crore compared with Rs 94 crore in FY09. Sunil Munshi, CEO, tea division of Andrew Yule said: “This season during the first flush tea production, we had made some exclusive handrolled speciality teas which have been branded as Black Star and have been sold at attractive prices in the world market. These teas are customised and are for exclusive mail order exports to European Union and the USA. In fact, Black Star has been sold at Rs 7,000 per kg in these markets,” said Mr Munshi. Mr Munshi added that Harrods has been buying single estate teas from the company for the last three years. “This year, it is likely to buy our designer speciality teas. A testing session will be held this Friday for Harrods officials and we are hopeful that they will select our teas,” he said. While speciality designer teas are largely targeted towards the international markets, organic tea and green tea are meant for the domestic market. “We have test marketed these teas and the response is quite encouraging. These teas will be available at the speciality tea stores in Sikkim, Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kolkata. We are also in the process of tying up with a renowned pharmacy chain for marketing these teas,” said Mr I Sengupta, director (personnel) of the company. The company aims to sell 15 tonne of speciality teas in the current fiscal. The company produces 11 million kg of quality teas at its 15 tea estates. In FY11, the company has targeted an export of 3 lakh kg of bulk teas. --
