Over sips of coffee with her Singaporean collaborators, Eric Ng, Adam Lee and Kenn Chua, she was describing her forthcoming English CD, Jupiter, as one that gives away her dark side. While she did not spell it out, word has it the singer-songwriter was upset that Universal Music Taiwan did not renew her three-album contract after it lapsed earlier this year. A spokesman for the label's Singapore office said that it was because sales of Chua's last two Mandarin albums, Remember (2000) and I Do Believe (2001), fell short of its 100,000 threshold for Taiwan. They had sold about 60,000 copies each. Instead of wallowing, she dove headlong into making Jupiter. 'Making it gave me peace of mind. There was more free rein and I had the most fun, especially knowing that there was no pressure or questions like 'Is this commercial enough?',' she said. Jupiter is her third English album following 1997's Bored and 1998's Luck. It will be released on Sept 30 by Yellow Music, a subsidiary of her management company, Music & Movement. The boyish bunch of Ng, Lee and Chua arranged, co-produced and played guitars on various tracks. Lee, 30, and Ng, 26, are now on tour as session guitarists with A*mei and Sandy Lam respectively. Chua, 36, is an arranger who has worked with Stefanie Sun and Hongkong artistes like Jacky Cheung, Aaron Kwok and Karen Mok. Also sharing co-producer credits is Austrian musician Bernhard Lupo Groinig, 35. Whether he and Tanya are still an item is a taboo topic. Read together with songs like Lost, which laments the loss of love, her 'no comment' response only invites speculation that their long-distance relationship is history. But, it's not as if she cares. 'Whatever I'm feeling is probably what you are feeling at the same time. It's something you can relate to. It's not just about me.' Jupiter by Tanya Chua will be available at HMV and Borders from Sept 30. YELLOW 'A more mellow, romantic take of the Coldplay hit which we performed at the Singapore Music Festival in April.' SANCTUARY OF LOVE 'This is taken from my third Mandarin album, Chong Dong (Impulsive). (Music & Movement's managing director) Lim Sek liked it so much he insisted I re-record it.' JUST LIKE THE MOVIES 'A retro American pop song which describes how you want a fairy-tale ending where everyone gets what they deserve, just like the movies.' DAY & NIGHT 'The R&B version on my second Mandarin album was turned into an acoustic Jonatha Brooke-styled song.' LOST 'An ambient number about losing love and knowing what you've lost only after going away.'
