Dozens of hopefuls tried out for a starring role in the new Take That
musical today.
Despite not being endorsed by the group, aspiring Robbies and Garys
turned up to open auditions for West End show 'Never Forget'.
The musical features their greatest hits and is a fictional story about
a Take That tribute band.
The real Take That have refused to endorse the show - but that did not
stop the hopefuls queuing for the auditions in London's Covent Garden.
At the head of the queue was Craig Edgley, at 17 the youngest
auditionee.
He set off from his home in Grantham, Lincs, at 6am, accompanied by
mum Jackie.
"This is my first ever audition so I am a little bit nervous," said
Craig, a student at Brooksby Melton College.
"I've come down with my mum, she is a massive Take That fan.
"I heard about the auditions when I went to a convention and met
Toyah Wilcox and she said 'you should go for this musical, you remind
me of Robbie'."
Hairdresser Jackie said: "I am very proud of him. He's always loved
performing, ever since he was a little boy.
"He's only 17 so he doesn't really remember the old Take That songs
but he knows the new ones."
Craig sang Moon Dance for the judges, who praised his "energy,
enthusiasm and spirit." He will find out later today if he will be
called back.
Jay McManus, 23, originally from Weymouth in Dorset, admitted he
prefers rock music to boy bands.
"I'm not really a Take That fan, although I respect them because they
write their own music.
"I'm a lot more into 80s rock, like Billy Idol and Iron Maiden."
Jay was hoping to be cast as the Howard Donald or Jason Orange
characters.
"Gary Barlow is a bit too heavy for me and Mark Owen is a bit too
short, so maybe I could be Howard or Jason," he said.
Like many of the hopefuls, Jay has some stage experience.
He appeared in the Osmonds Christmas Show in the US and Spirit of the
Damned in China, but this would be his first West End role.
Never Forget opens at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff on July 20
and will play Glasgow, Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent and Edinburgh prior
to its West End launch.
It features the chart hits Relight My Fire, Pray and Back For Good as
well as the show's title song.
