But when it came time Thursday to unveil plans for this season's event, the Third Annual T-Mac Celebrity Softball Tournament Aug. 24 at Baseball USA, there was only one place to make the announcement. McGrady spoke at the new technology and learning center at Ross Elementary School, which was built from money raised during last summer's tournament. A similar facility is planned for Kashmere Gardens Elementary with this summer's proceeds. "This is what it's really all about: the kids," McGrady said. "This is why I entertain. I do it for the kids. If it wasn't for the kids, there's no prof- essional athletes, no endorsement deals. Just giving them the opportunity to be successful brings joy to myself. I have two and one on the way, so to have the opportunity to do this for them, see the smiles on their faces and how much light is on their faces is just unbelievable. "I didn't know what to envision. This is unbelievable. I'm proud it turned out this way." Though McGrady made his announcement in a week when other pro athletes have been in the news for misdeeds, he said the attention paid to sports figures can be valuable to a community. "There's a lot of guys out there that do things in the community," he said. "We're under a microscope. We're athletes. We're making so much money. As individuals, you have control over your own actions. That's why I take pride in this. I want to see them successful, and I don't want to let them down. "I can't really control what other people do.
