──────────────────────────────────────
1. A Day a Gorilla Gives a Banana (1:40)
Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto
Violin: Everton Nelson,
Cello: Jaques Morelenbaum,
Piano: Ryuichi Sakamoto
Originally written for a 1978 PARCO commercial featuring Faye Dunaway.
(PARCO is a Japanese department store) The song was first performed in
1986 during the MediaBahn tour in Japan. The live CD is available from
MIDI Records, Japan.
2. Rain (3:38)
Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto
Violin: David Nadien,
Cello: Jaques Morelenbaum,
Piano: Ryuichi Sakamoto
This piece was originally written in 1986 for the multi-Oscar winning
film "The Last Emperor." (directed by Bernardo Bertolucci) It is
Bertolucci's favorite song from the film perhaps because the music
itself has some operatic touches to it. It has been re-arranged specially
for this album.
3. Bibo no Aozora (6:36)
Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto
Violin: Everton Nelson,
Cello: Jaques Morelenbaum,
Piano: Ryuichi Sakamoto
Originally written for Ryuichi's lastest album, "Smoochy," (released in
Japan on For Life/Gut Records in 1995).This more minimalistic arrangement
of the song contrasts with the Antonio Carlos Jobim-like romanticism on
the "SMOOCHY" album. (Available early summer on IRS Records.)
4. The Last Emperor (5:53)
Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto
Violin: Everton Nelson,
Cello: Jaques Morelenbaum,
Piano: Ryuichi Sakamoto
Originally written for Bernardo Bertolucci's film "The Last Emperor" in
1986, this piece combines all the themes from the film and weaves them
into a majestic finale.
5. 1919 (6:22)
Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto
Violin: Everton Nelson,
Cello: Jaques Morelenbaum,
Piano: Ryuichi Sakamoto
This is a new composition incorporating the romanticism present in the
French movie soundtracks of the 60's and more contemporary minimalistic
ideas in the arrangement. The piece uses one of V. I. Lenin's public
addresses from 1919.
6. Merry Christmas Mr.Lawrence (4:46)
←俘虏
Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto
Violin: Everton Nelson,
Cello: Jaques Morelenbaum,
Piano: Ryuichi Sakamoto
This beautiful film theme from Japanese auteur Nagisa Oshima's "Merry
Christmas Mr. Lawrence" uses modern harmonies to underscore the more
familiar melody based on the 'Asian' pentatonic scale. This arrangement
let's Ryuichi's innate expressiveness soar. His moving performance on
this track speaks of the deep connection between his music and his
emotional ties to his co-starring role in the film.
7. M.A.Y. in The Backyard (4:24)
Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto
Violin: Everton Nelson,
Cello: Jaques Morelenbaum,
Piano: Ryuichi Sakamoto
This song is about 3 cats (M.A.Y. are the initials of the cats' names)
which used to hang around in the backyard of Ryuichi's house in Tokyo.
Although the house no longer belongs to Ryuichi and the 3 cats have
assumed their next lives, the songs reflect on the playful and
mischievous vicissitudes of the 3 felines. The feline vicissitudes are
also reflected in the use of Olivier Messian's compositional method. The
distinct 'moodments' were composed independently and then later combined.
8. The Sheltering Sky (4:33)
Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto
Violin: David Nadien,
Cello: Jaques Morelenbaum,
Piano: Ryuichi Sakamoto
The song was originally written as the main theme for Bernardo
Bertolucci 's Golden Globe Award-winning adaptation of "The Sheltering
Sky " by Paul Bowles.
9. A Tribute to N.J.P. (3:17)
Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto
Violin: Everton Nelson,
Cello: Jaques Morelenbaum,
Piano: Ryuichi Sakamoto
The song is a tribute to video art pioneer and long time friend, Nam June
Paik. As in the 1984 version on "Illustrated Music Encyclopedia," the
combination of Paik's recorded voice, the almost atonal melody, and the
spirit of the French composers of the 20's appear to the ear as
pictorially as one of Paik's installations.
10. High Heels -Main Theme- (3:18)
Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto
Violin: Everton Nelson,
Cello: Jaques Morelenbaum,
Piano: Ryuichi Sakamoto
The song is a rearrangement of the main theme from Pedro Almodovar's
1991 film "High Heels."
11. Aoneko no Torso (2:32)
Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto
Violin: Everton Nelson,
Cello: Jaques Morelenbaum,
Piano: Ryuichi Sakamoto
Unlike the original song written for Ryuichi's lastest album, "Smoochy,"
(released in Japan on For Lifse/Gut Records in 1995) the trio format
brings out a style reminiscent of Eric Satie. Also notice the phenomenal
improvised solo by Jacques.
12. The Wuthering Heights (5:20)
Music by Ryuichi Sakamoto
Violin: Everton Nelson,
Cello: Jaques Morelenbaum,
Piano: Ryuichi Sakamoto
Ryuichi originally scored this title theme in 1992 for the re-made
version of "The Wuthering Heights" (directed by Peter Kosminsky) to
include Irish motifs. This arrangement retains much of the original
feeling.
