Tree rings, visible when a tree is cut down, are a useful record of the
climate during the life of the tree. Under warm and moist conditions, rings
increase in thickness (so there are fewer rings per inch of wood) whereas
during cold and dry periods tree growth slows and there are many more rings
per inch. For example, the oldest living organisms on this planet are
bristlecone pines, Pinus longaeva, which are found in the southwestern part
of the United States, and one (appropriately named ‘Methuselah’) has been
dated at 4,769 years old based on tree rings.
A dendrochronologist (someone who studies tree rings) has noted that for some
trees in his study area growth rings are deposited at an overall average rate
of 3 rings per millimeter, going back a thousand years. He counted the
number of rings per millimeter for specific time periods, and recorded the
following:
Time period Rings/mm
1400-1499 1.5
1500-1599 1.6
1600-1699 4.8
1700-1799 6.9
1800-1899 3.7
Do these data indicate any significant cooler/drier or warmer/wetter periods
in this area?
实在是不知道该用甚麽方法解才好...@@
