Dallas appears to be one option, but there is some pessimism among Mavericks observers about their ability to land him. It is uncertain what role Manu Ginobili’s improved health with play in the Spurs’ calculus. As of only a few days ago, there was substantial uncertainty among the Spurs about how soon Ginobili might return from testicular surgery and how long it might take the 38-year-old to ramp back into game shape once he is cleared to play. Since the Spurs got back from their rodeo trip on Sunday, Ginobili has returned to the practice floor, creating optimism he might be a reliable part of their playoff picture. This might mitigate the Spurs’ need to add another shooting guard, however … 2. Heading into the season, the Spurs felt like they needed to replace Marco Belinelli’s shooting off the bench, and couldn’t. Belinelli left for a free agent deal in Sacramento, and the best the Spurs could do to fill the spot was undrafted rookie Jonathon Simmons. Simmons has been something of a surprise to the Spurs, given where he came from, but a shooter he is not. That need still remains. A career 17.6 points-per-game scorer over 11-plus NBA seasons, Martin readily fits that bill. It will take 48 hours for Martin to clear waivers. After that, he can sign with a new team at any time and remain eligible to play in the postseason.
