In a Hitchcock-style thriller, Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez eventually got the better of Yves Allegro and Marco Chiudinelli after 4 hours and 47 minutes to give Spain a 2-1 lead. When Chiudinelli’s backhand return failed to clear the net at match point the passionate Spanish crowd in Geneva’s Palexpo went into a state of frenzy. Lopez and Verdasco fell to the ground to hug, and the Spanish TV was quick at hand with the first interviews from courtside. "I am very happy and proud that we have come out as the winners," Lopez acknowledged. The final result – 76(5) 67(3) 67(2) 61 1210 - tells how close the match was. In the fifth set, the Spaniards had to serve to stay in the match no less than six times and, a total of five times, at 5-4 and 8-7, the Swiss were just two points from victory. "We are very disappointed that we couldn't manage to win the match", Chiudinelli said after his first match with Allegro in more than two years. Despite losing his serve at 10-10, Chiudinelli had been the stronger Swiss in the fifth set. He picked up his return game that he had struggled with for a long time and produced a number of high-quality shots. Unfortunately, Allegro, who had had the better start, couldn't keep it up. "We never returned well in the same time", Allegro said, "and in the fifth set, I didn't return at all." No breaks in first three sets The match on the ultra-rapid Taraflex had begun as expected with the serve dominating from the first point. In the first set, the Swiss only conceded four points on serve up to the tiebreak and had two break points at 4-4 with Verdasco serving. In the tiebreak, the Swiss headed out for a strong start, taking the early 4-0 lead before the visitors struck back. "In the end, this set has been fatal for us," regretted Allegro. The second set was almost the reverse with the Spaniards unable to convert a total of three breakpoints at 3-3 and 4-4. The tiebreak was one-sided with the Swiss on fire and winning it 7-3. The hosts were on the verge of taking the upper hand in the third set but couldn't capitalize on three break points in the eighth game. The third tiebreak ended with another Swiss domination. The fourth set was very one-sided with the Spanish team breaking Chiudinelli twice. Spain in driving seat Spain are now the huge favourite to advance to the quarterfinals. They have two chances to seal the tie, the first for Verdasco (or Lopez) against Swiss rookie Stephane Bohli ranked No. 278 and in an eventual fifth live rubber David Ferrer would face Chiudinelli, who has already spent almost eight hours on the court. "Let's hope, Stephane wins and then I'll be ready despite some fatigue. We have no choice," Chiudinelli said. ...but likely without Nadal The chances that Rafael Nadal will enter the tie tomorrow as a player are slim. "It's almost sure that he won't play," captain Emilio Sanchez said.
