Day 10 - Tommy Robredo Interview Wednesday, June 1, 2005 Q. You seemed to rebound a little bit in the fourth set. You didn't seem to have too much energy in the second and third set. Then you gave it back to him in the fifth for a while. Can you talk about how you were feeling out there. Did you leave a lot of your energy behind in the Safin match? TOMMY ROBREDO: Yeah, it was strange, no? I start pretty good in the first set. And then in the second, I feel little bit tired. And couldn't move so quick. Then I started to make a lot of mistakes. Well, then I lost the second, third straight very easily. Then on the fourth, I just try to push as hard as I could and finally he make a few mistakes. And he couldn't take the match there because he got a little bit nervous there. Well, I push for the fifth and then it's really close, no? It's a really close match. Really close fifth set and finally it goes to him, no? But, well, life of tennis is like this. Sometimes you make great wins for little; and sometimes you make big losses for little bit of points, no? And that's it. Q. Can you talk a little bit about the disappointment. Can you even feel it right now? Is it too soon after the match? TOMMY ROBREDO: Well, of course I'm a little bit disappointed, no? Always when you are in a round, you are trying to arrive to the next one, no? But anyway I have to see all the tournament, not just one day. I'm playing a lot better and doing great matches. I did a great tournament here anyway. Of course I'm disappointed, no? If not, I will not be a tennis player. Every time you lose, you have to be disappointed, and that's our life. Q. You tried a lot of dropshots from the baseline that didn't seem to work that well for you. Actually, did some in Safin. Was that trying to change things up or find something different that might have worked for you? What was your thoughts on that? TOMMY ROBREDO: Well, when you make a drop trying to win the point, it's one thing. When you make a drop trying to finish the point, it's another thing. I think last day I did drops to try to win the point, and today I did drops just to try to short the -- get little bit shorter the points, no? And that's why maybe I miss a lot. But, well, I think physically, I wasn't too strong like last day. That's little bit one of the reasons that I make a lot of mistakes, no? But anyway it's tough during the second week of a Grand Slam, being -- playing five sets last day with a lot of tension. Well, it can happen. Q. Tommy, looking ahead to Friday's match between Federer and Nadal, from what you've seen in this tournament so far, how do you expect that game to go? What should we be looking for in that match? TOMMY ROBREDO: I don't know. I'm gonna be at home getting some rest. For sure I'm not gonna see that match. Then you will tell me after in another Grand Slam. THE MODERATOR: Questions in Spanish, please. Q. What happened today? TOMMY ROBREDO: Well, I think I started very well. Then in the second and third set, I was feeling not so well physically. I was not feeling 100%. I was very tired, especially after the match with Safin. It's difficult against Davydenko because he has very strong shots. If you're not feeling 100% physically, it's difficult. Then in the fourth set I tried to give my all. I tried to put all the strengths that remained. After that, I could go to the fifth set. And in the fifth set, well, it was 3-3, then there was a break. He wasn't feeling so well. Me neither. But I was probably feeling better than him at that point. I think that would have been the key to the match, really. I tried to make the break, and then in the end, he made the break. And I tried to break back, but it got a little complicated for me. Q. He said that when you were 4-All, he was almost giving it up. TOMMY ROBREDO: Yeah, I could see that he wasn't feeling 100%, that he had trouble with one of his legs. But he has very strong shots. Even if he's not feeling 100%, he manages to score his points. I think that he scored some good points - and some points that I was not expecting, in fact. But in a fifth set, everybody's tired. He maybe was struggling with that more than me. Q. How do you feel after having lost a match like this? Just at the doors of the semifinal. TOMMY ROBREDO: Well, obviously, you don't feel very well. I mean, when you lose a match, you don't feel good about it, you know. This was a special match because it was a quarterfinal and you're trying to get into the semis. When you lose it, especially when it's such a tight match -- because when it's 3-Love, you say, "Okay, the other one won it in three sets; this is much better." But we went to five sets. I gave my all. I was fighting till the end. You know, you lose, but it's very, very tight. It's so close. You think, "It's such a shame, isn't it?" But that's what tennis is all about. In a way, it's positive because I'm playing much better. After all the problems I've been having, well, I've reached a good level and I'm playing better and better. So I've lost today, but I think I've been having a good season. Q. I can imagine that you feel you've lost a great opportunity? TOMMY ROBREDO: Yeah, but, you know, every time you lose a tournament, you lose a great opportunity. And when the matches are so tight, well, you know, I could have lost against Safin and I didn't. It was a great opportunity for Safin, and he didn't take it. Well, when you lose, you know, especially when it's so tight, you do feel that you've lost a good opportunity. Davydenko is one of the Top 10 players. He plays at a very good level. Well, losing against him might not have been a great opportunity than losing against somebody else. I've gone through the quarterfinals, so, you know, well... Q. You realize that your tennis enables you to play on clay, on grass, on hard courts. What's important this year is your health, because I can remember that in Australia, what happened. So I know you're not thinking about the future yet, but... TOMMY ROBREDO: Yeah, well, you know, when you lose a match, it doesn't really change much. Now what I'm going to do is I'm going to rest for a few days. After, I'm going to Rosmalen, then I'll go to Wimbledon. You know, the season continues. This year it was very difficult, also the end of last year. But I'm here. I'm here. I'm feeling better. I'm playing very well. I'm very close to achieving something great. So it could have been much worse and I'm feeling very well. So I've lost a match but it's not much. I think that I could have been here really happy with a victory, but, you know, I didn't win. I lost. And that's what tennis is all about. Q. Is it the match against Safin that really cost you the match of today? TOMMY ROBREDO: Well, obviously, it was the toughest match for me, that match against Safin. But this year I didn't really train very much because of my shoulder. I just go on the court, play for half an hour. So my aim was to get my shoulder better, and I wasn't expecting to do anything wonderful. You know, just being used to running three hours and training, and then playing on the following day, well, I wasn't used to that anymore. So now I've been playing much better on clay, and, well, tennis, you know, you have to try to give your all. I'm feeling better and better. The great thing is that now I can start working like I used to work before. So I can say, "Okay, I want to improve this; I want to improve that," and I can physically try to feel 100% and to start setting new goals for myself. Unfortunately, because of my problems, I didn't really set any goals. I was just trying to get on to the court without feeling any pain; that had been my goal. So now that I managed to do that, we're going to continue to work hard. And after Miami, well, I was in the quarterfinals, very close to semis. Then I got better. I started playing at a good level. I think that my level has gotten much better. Physically, I'm feeling much better. I'm really feeling fine, you know. So I've got to continue to fight. There are other tournaments. I'll try to go as far as possible in those tournaments and try to, you know, get more points in the ranking, get more experience, and be at the top again. 身体没问题了就好好努力吧 目标:温布顿八强XD -- Soulmates never die --
