E-mails from 76ers fans have been scarce this season.
Perhaps it's because fans figure they're not going to waste their time on a
team that isn't likely to get beyond the first round of the playoffs.
But fans' e-mail picked up in the wake of Monday's 28-point loss to the
Wizards. And while they aren't getting on coach Maurice Cheeks yet, it's fair
to say the fans aren't nominating team president Billy King for executive of
the year or Kyle Korver for all-defensive honors.
Here is a sampling:
n “I love the fact that (King) is mad,” wrote one. “Who put this team
together? How many coaches do we go through before someone realizes that Duke
grads don't have all the answers? ... (Samuel) Dalembert is a joke for the
money they pay, and Korver couldn't cover you and I.”
* “I don't get this guy,” wrote another of Chris Webber. “He's been
complaining ever since he got here! I mean, he plays zero defense and wants to
take all of these far-out jump shots. Is it the system or is it the players
that are making this team struggle?”
*“They don't play with a sense of urgency anymore,” another said. “Players
are one-dimensional. Sammy has no basketball IQ (outside of blocking shots).
Korver has to shoot over 85 percent to be of any value. He is a defensive
liability. I don't know who in the league he can check.
“Nobody on the bench has a nasty disposition. Webber is a jump-shooting power
forward. (John) Salmons would not be here if (Willie) Green did not get hurt.
Who scouted Steven Hunter? What does he do well? Is he better than Marc
Jackson?
Marc
Jackson好?」
“I am supposed to pay to see (Shavlik) Randolph, (Michael) Bradley, (Matt)
Barnes, etc?” he continued. “Who scouted (Lee) Nailon? We had no one better
on the market than (Kevin) Ollie?”
* “The 76ers have two of the most self-centered players to ever play the game
(Allen Iverson and Webber),” added another. “They just don't realize that
real winning involves making others better by actually involving them in the
offense as reward for playing tough defense. That's why those discussions go in
circles about why the 76ers don't put more effort into playing defense. And, of
course, there's the incompetent Billy King.”
One perceptive reader observed that an apparent change in Webber has resulted
in offensive stagnation:
* “For some reason, Chris Webber has quit passing the ball,” he wrote
Saturday afternoon, one day after an 89-86 overtime win over the Grizzlies. “
At the beginning of the season, Chris was hitting the open man and his
teammates were moving without the ball. Now, for some reason, that's all
changed. Every time he touches the ball, he's looking at the basket.
“In my opinion, it hurts our offense. Our offense has become strictly
one-on-one. We have no ball movement, no player movement. We must run more
isolation plays than anybody in the league. What happened?”
Good question.
*
This week's question: Who holds the NBA record for most points in a single
overtime period?
Here are a few hints: He's under 6-feet tall and active.
The answer appears later.

While I know it ranks down on the Sixers' list of priorities, can somebody
explain why rookie guard Louis Williams isn't playing for the NBDL's Roanoke
Dazzle, instead of sitting at the end of the Sixers' bench during games — if
he's even activated?
The idea was for Williams to learn by practicing against Allen Iverson. Well,
Iverson seems to always be banged up and rarely practices, so Williams spends
more time facing Ollie.
The 19-year-old Williams, who starred at South Gwinnett High (Ga.) last season,
is a long way from being an NBA contributor. He'd be much better served taking
the first step by playing in the NBDL.

The answer: The Nuggets' 5-foot-5 Earl Boykins holds the NBA record for most
points in an overtime period with 15 in Denver's 116-110 victory over Seattle
on Jan. 19, 2005. The old mark was 14 by the Pacers' Butch Carter on March 20,
1984.
