Malone would rather contribute than coach

The 76ers were going through what was supposed to be a light practice yesterday
with young players after the veterans were given time off, but Moses Malone had
quickly worked up a deep sweat.
Moses
Malone
The three-time NBA most valuable player and the player responsible for putting
the championship 1982-83 76ers over the top, Malone looked, at age 50, as if he
could still produce a double-figure rebounding night.
The Hall of Famer arrived to help earlier this month and will return to Houston
after the Sixers' game tomorrow at the Wachovia Center against the Golden State
Warriors.
Wachovia Center
While Malone said he has no intentions of becoming an NBA coach, working for
the Sixers and his old point guard and current coach Maurice Cheeks has been
an uplifting experience.
"I really have enjoyed it," Malone said after yesterday's workout at the
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. "It's been a nice opportunity
to work with the young players."
Malone was known for his relentless work ethic during a 21-year career that
included two seasons in the ABA and 19 in the NBA.
"When he first came here, we were distracted because he was such a legend,"
said rookie Shavlik Randolph, who has been a pleasant surprise this season.
"Then he would tell us to do a drill over for the 50th time. We got used to him
and how hard he wants us all to work."
Malone said he is doing it for the love of the game. "I made a good living and
don't need the money," he said. "My portfolio is great."
Since his final NBA season in 1994-95, Malone has been retired and living in
Houston. He said he has enjoyed watching his sons compete in sports. Son
Moses is playing basketball professionally in China, and another son, Michael,
is a wide receiver at Sam Houston State.
When asked if he would like to coach full time in the NBA, Malone paused and
then smiled.
"The only full-time coaching I do is in the pro-am summer league in Houston,"
he said. "I coach young guys there."
He wouldn't shut the door to coaching in the NBA, but didn't seem that anxious
to open it, either.
"That would take a lot of thought for me to do that," he said.
When Malone came to the Sixers, they were in a rebounding funk, having been
outrebounded in 13 of their first 18 games.
Cheeks said he had planned all along to bring Malone in, and it was a
coincidence that he came when all the rebounding leaks were springing.
Still, in the seven games since his arrival, the Sixers (13-12) are 5-2 and
have outrebounded their opponents in those five wins. Malone has done more than
just talk and coach rebounding.
"He has been invaluable, and his value has been on and off the court," Cheeks
said. "Not necessarily just showing them a technique of rebounding the ball,
but telling them a certain thing."
One person who has identified with Malone has been center Samuel Dalembert.
The Sixers have a coaching staff comprised of former guards, and Malone is
somebody whom Dalembert can look up to.
Malone
"We have a great coaching staff, but when you have a big guy who played the
game, you can really relate to him," Dalembert said. "It would be like me
trying to teach a point guard things. You could do it, but I wouldn't be able
to relate to those players."
Malone agreed.
Malone
"It takes a big man to teach a big man what he does and that he has to do the
dirty work," he said.
After the workout, Malone went to the weight room for more work. For somebody
who is retired, he still works hard. And Malone can relate to the stars and the
benchwarmers alike.
"Moses gave the players an example of when he wasn't playing early in his
career, but he continued going to practice, working hard each day, and when it
was his time, they couldn't take him off the floor," Cheeks said. "His message
to the players has been great. Some of them listen to him and some don't, but
you aren't taking full advantage if you don't listen to what Moses Malone has
to say."
