Cheeks arrives in Philadelphia after three-plus seasons as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. He recorded a mark of 162-139 (.538) in Portland, the fourth-highest win total in Blazers history. Cheeks worked under head coaches John Lucas (1994-96), Johnny Davis (1996-97), and Larry Brown (1997-2001). He retired in 1993 as the league's all-time steals leader and was fifth on the career assists list. Maurice led the 76ers in assists in all 11 seasons he played in Philadelphia and also topped the team in steals in each of his first 10 years. He finished his collegiate career third on the Buffaloes' all-time scoring list, averaging 16.8 points per game and shooting 56.8 percent from the field as a senior. Cheeks was selected in the second round of the 1978 NBA Draft (36th overall) by the Sixers. He will be a big player for us this year, a key player. He gets a lot of attention paid to him, and someone had mentioned about him leading the league in assists, and only once has a player led the league in assists and scoring. I'm not saying Allen will do that, but I do think he can lead the league in assists. He's a great player and can really dish the ball in addition to score it, and I think he'll continue to improve in that area this year for us.
