With prep players making the jump to the NBA a regular thing these days, the
2005 class of seniors was said to be devoid of any players able to make the
leap straight to the NBA. The summer AAU circuit may have changed some of
those opinions, and while there is no sure fire #1 pick in this class (much
less sure lottery picks), like LeBron James two years ago, Dwight Howard last
year, and possibly Indianapolis’ Greg Oden in 2006 and Cincinnatti’s OJ
Mayo in 2007, there are a handful of potential first rounders.
Louis Williams
Snellville, GA guard Louis Williams is among those. The AAU Georgia Stars’
high flyer has been lighting up scoreboards at camp after camp all summer
long, starting with earning the MVP of the Boo Williams Invitational, putting
up 40 to lead his undefeated South team to the championship at the USA Youth
Development Festival (only the second time ever a team finished undefeated at
the festival), and an impressive showing at the NBA Players Association camp,
among other outstanding showings. He’s put his sharp shooting from deep and
jaw-dropping vertical leap on display all over the country this summer.
“It’s been real tiring,” Williams said about his summer. “A lot of events
you’ve got to go to, a lot of camps. It’s been tiring, but it’s been fun.
You have to do it; it’s a part of what you have to do if you want to get
your name out there, for people to recognize your talent.”
“It’s been pretty busy, but at the same time I’m used to it,” added
Williams. “It’s hard being away from your family, and being away from your
friends, being away from the things that you want to do everyday, but like I
said, it comes with the territory.”
The Atlanta area native made his mark on the summer AAU circuit long ago,
going against the best of the best, and coming out on top a lot more than not.
“I think I’ve played exceptionally well (this summer),” said Williams. “I
’ve battled the top guards, every guard in the country pretty much, whether
it was at the Nike (All-American) Camp (in Indianapolis), or at the (USA)
Youth (Development) Festival. I’ve battled everybody and I think I’ve
pretty much sealed that I’m one of the top guards in the country.”
As you can tell, among the many tools in the 17-year-old’s arsenal is an air
of extreme confidence, but he backs that confidence up with his play on the
floor. Often times alongside good friend Mike Mercer, Jr., Williams does it
all on the floor. He was the overall leader in assists at the Nike Peach Jam
in North Augusta, S.C., has the ability to get up and block shots in the open
floor, and the quickness to snag steals. A silky smooth shooter with
developing mid range game, Williams will also cause arenas to explode when he
and Mercer connect on one of their many alley-oops. A shade over 6’, and
around 170 pound, Williams has plenty of tools that NBA teams want out of
their PGs, but also has plenty of question marks about his game, and ability
to take on a point guard’s duties as well.
“It’s a thought,” Williams said about possibly going directly to the NBA
out of South Gwinnett High School. “But I have to get bigger. I have to get
stronger. I have to become consistent with my jump shot, because at my
height, my size, I have to have a jumper. That’s crucial, at (the NBA) level
anyway. You don’t see Allen Iverson really going to the rack, you see him
shooting a lot of jump shots and doing a lot of things on the perimeter.”
Iverson is one player Williams’ game is often is compared to, but does he
have the mental toughness of the former state champion winning option
quarterback who’s been pounded into the hardwood during drives to the paint
seemingly millions of times (and one who also had that little jail stint
coming out of Bethel High School in 1993 before attending Georgetown)?
“I really try to pattern myself after my own game and try to really pave my
own way, but if I compare myself to anybody it would be Allen Iverson,” said
Williams.
Iverson also was forced to fail as the Philadelphia 76ers starting PG before
they ever brought in Eric Snow to allow him to move to his more natural SG
position. Like Iverson, Williams is a natural at putting the ball in the
bucket, but the biggest question around him right now seems to be how he’ll
handle playing point guard.
“It’s just a matter of putting my mind to it,” Williams said about making
the adjustment to the point. “Working on my ball handling skills, being on
the ball more often, playing the PG position in more games and more
practices, just working at that position. That looks like that’s what I’m
going to have to do, (so) I’m going to work on some of the things that PGs
do, and try to mold myself into being a pure PG.”
Williams has not had the chance to work on playing PG much this summer, as
the Stars have other small G’s Billy Humphrey, as well as PGs Paul Williams,
Tay Barber, and Mercer, Jr., on the roster. He shares the PG duties on South
Gwinnett with Mercer, and according to Louis Williams, the adjustment will be
“just be an adjustment in my mind, not necessarily physical.”
Right now, Williams and Mercer are committed to play at the University of
Georgia for head coach Dennis Felton. But can the Bulldogs expect to see him
become a resident of the Athens campus?
“Well the NBA is going to be there, (so) I’m going to take my time about
making a decision,” said Williams. “Right now, (the) University of Georgia
is my focus, and that’s where I’m going to be. But, I’m going to take my
time, just see how things develop, how things pan out, and hopefully I’ll be
able to make a decision.”
With almost a year to work on the things he needs to improve before making
that decision, does Williams feel he’ll be ready by that time to make the
jump?
“I think so,” replied Williams. “Probably by this time next year, I’ll be
ready for the NBA. I’ll be ready for that level of competition. It just
takes getting stronger.”
