Thanks to funding from quarterback Matt Leinart's foundation, they hosted a barbecue and carnival for the kids at Save the Family's Mesa headquarters Tuesday. Joining Leinart and Sharapova were Calais Campbell, Neil Rackers, Deuce Lutui, Stephen Spach and Ben Graham. They all signed autographs, pitched balls, and posed for photos with the kids and their families. Save The Family provides housing, counseling, job-training and other programs for families throughout the Valley who are left homeless by domestic violence, substance abuse or poverty. Playing Santa was Cardinals strength coach John Lott, who distributed gifts to the children. Because he and other team doctors had been working with Sharapova, she decided to visit the kids, too. Save the Family Executive Director Janice Parker was delighted that Leinart and his teammates could spend the afternoon with the kids, especially since her non-profit agency has been struggling with a dramatic drop in contributions. The Cardinals aren't the only professional sports team in the Valley that supports Save the Family. The Phoenix Suns also have been strong supporters and the players' wives have helped remodel parts of the agency's headquarters. The Matt Leinart Foundation provides money and opportunities for disadvantage youth through learning centers, sports activities and "granting wishes." Its Web site says its goals are to "build character development, and help each child maximize academic and personal achievement."
