It is generally agreed that society benefits from the work of its members. Compare the contributions to artists to society with the contributions of scientists to society. Which type of contribution do you think is valued more by your society? Give specific reasons to support your answer. === Before we discuss the priorities of contributions from scientists and artists, we should define “contributions” first. Since I live in Taiwan, an island just experienced economic booming years ago, I would rather relate the contribution to this society with the economical success. As it is known that during the early developing period of a country, investment to science and technology research decides the economic growth and power of a country. And our predecessors really set up a lot of infrastructures for us so that we have a better life now. So, I would prefer the contribution from scientist instead of those from artist in accordance with the development of this society. Following explains my choice. About the late 70’s to early 80’s, the government decided to concentrate on development of electronic industries. Then, a well-famous enterprise was built up, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacture Company (TSMC). And as we know, the company has become the top one in the field of semiconductor foundry. At that time, government could choose to invest art industries, like movie industry and music industry, but no evidence showed our advantages over other countries. To build a leading organization that dominated the trend of art was nearly impossible in this land. In addition, the government policy promoted a lot opportunities for experts. And this further disclosed the possibility of fast technology and engineering innovation. That’s why people here always utilize the cheapest and best electronic products. And we can easily find a job according to our interests. To sum up, although art may stimulate individual aesthetic emotions and incite the passion of life, we do have more benefits from the scientists. In the future, our society may need artists to direct a brand-new value for people here. Now, it’s the scientists’ contributions which make this vigorous society. -- --
