She will meet world No.32 Lucie Safarova in the opening round. Safarova, a 20-year-old from the Czech Republic, is in the form of her life. She beat world No.5 Svetlana Kuznetosva 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the Paris indoor event this week, having seen off ninth-ranked Nicole Vaidisova 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. She also beat world No.3 Amelie Mauresmo in straight sets at the Australian Open last month. Ana has played the Czech once before. She lost in three sets in a junior event in Italy when aged 14. If she can overcome Safarova, Ana will meet either world No.53 Nathalie Dechy or a qualifier in the second round. Second seed and former champion Kim Clijsters, the only player in the top 20 who Ana is yet to face, is Ana's seeded quarter-final opponent. Possible adversaries in the semi-finals include Elena Dementieva and Patty Schnyder. Mauresmo is the top seed and Ana cannot play her before the final.
