http://0rz.tw/H7iCK Giants belt four homers behind Vogelsong Righty stifles Fish, wins 10th; Ross ends solo streak, Belt hits two HRs By Christina De Nicola / MLB.com | 8/14/2011 5:13 PM ET MIAMI -- Since entering Giants camp as a non-roster invitee this spring, Ryan Vogelsong has been a pleasant surprise following a four-year absence from the Majors. In his last outing against the Pirates, he dropped his first decision in 12 starts during a stretch in which San Francisco dropped to second in the National League West. But Sunday afternoon, Vogelsong pitched 7 2/3 innings of four-hit ball, and the Giants hit four home runs, sinking the Marlins, 5-2, in front of 20,020 at Sun Life Stadium. "That was my biggest concern today was coming back after a bad one," Vogelsong said. "I just wanted to rebound and get going on the right track." The 34-year-old right-hander, who is 3-0 away from AT&T Park in nine outings this season, last lost a road decision July 27, 2005, against the Marlins. "Everything was pretty good," said Vogelsong, who tied a career high with eight strikeouts. "The cutter was really good. It's a pitch I struggled with for about a month and a half and found it a couple starts ago, and it's been a big pitch for me, getting me back in counts and keeping them off my heater a little bit." Cody Ross' two-run homer to left off Chris Volstad (5-9) gave the Giants a 2-1 lead in the third. It was Ross' ninth homer of the season, and first against his former club since being claimed off waivers last August. In the process, San Francisco's Major League record of 21 consecutive solo homers was snapped. The last time the Giants had hit a multi-run dinger had been July 6 on Nate Schierholtz's two-run long ball. Volstad walked Vogelsong with one out, and Ross connected on a 2-0 pitch. Heading into the game, Ross was hitting .161 (5-for-31) over his last nine games. "You work so hard to try and find that feeling, and that's what it is," said Ross, who finished 2-for-5. "And the confidence feel, it's starting to come, so hopefully we can keep it going and help the team." The Giants added a run on Schierholtz's homer -- his eighth of the year -- to right-center in the fourth. Brandon Belt went deep for a one-out solo shot in the sixth for his third homer of the season. He added another solo shot in the eighth. Belt, who was recalled from Triple-A Fresno before Saturday's game, earned the start in his fourth stint in the Majors this year. His dinger off reliever Mike Dunn in the eighth was the first allowed by the southpaw in his career against a left-handed hitter. "I'm just tired of thinking about what scenarios are, worrying about going out there and performing well," Belt said. "I'm just going to go out there and play baseball now. I think that's the best mindset I have." With four long balls on the day, the Giants tied their season high, which was set on June 2 at the Cardinals. "[Volstad] didn't pitch bad, except for the home run balls," Marlins manager Jack McKeon said. "With our offense, we can't afford to give up too many runs early. We just couldn't keep the ball in the park today with those guys." Vogelsong (10-2) surrendered a two-out solo blast to Mike Stanton to straightaway center in the first. For Stanton, it was his 26th homer on the season and came on the first pitch of the at-bat. Following Greg Dobbs' two-out single in the first, Vogelsong retired 17 batters in a row until Dobbs' one-out single to right in the seventh. The Giants righty tired in the eighth, allowing a two-out RBI double to Emilio Bonifacio and issuing his second walk of the inning before giving way to Santiago Casilla, who got Stanton to ground out to end the inning. When the Giants score four or more runs, they are 41-6. They won just their second Sunday road game of the season in nine tries. With a key four-game set against the NL Wild Card-leading Braves starting Monday, the Giants snapped their four-series losing streak. "For Volgey to go out there and to do that was really a lift for us, the bullpen and a big win," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We haven't had a series in a while. It's good to head to Atlanta taking a series here." Christina De Nicola is an associate reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs. --
