Sanchez recovering nicely from dislocation Bochy encouraged that infielder could return to Giants in August By Chris Haft / MLB.com | 07/02/11 8:37 PM ET DETROIT -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy had a brief but encouraging chat with second baseman Freddy Sanchez, who apparently is recovering smoothly from a dislocated right shoulder. Asked to estimate what the best-case scenario for Sanchez's return might be, Bochy said, "I'd hate to even guess." So in the next breath, Bochy guessed. "Probably sometime in August," he said. The worst-case scenario, of course, involves Sanchez missing the rest of the season. Bochy reported that Sanchez, who injured himself June 10, has begun taking light swings with a fungo bat. Left fielder Pat Burrell underwent an MRI to determine the extent of the trouble he's enduring due to a bone spur in his right foot. Burrell was scratched from Friday night's lineup as the designated hitter since the spur would not allow him to run. "He's much better today, but still not ready to go," Bochy said, adding that Burrell was available to pinch-hit. Bochy said that infielder Mike Fontenot, who's playing for Triple-A Fresno on an injury rehabilitation stint as he tries to recover from a strained left groin, probably will need at least 30 to 40 at-bats before the Giants will consider activating him. Former Giant Walker recalls historic night DETROIT -- Tyler Walker still recalls the otherworldly sensation he felt when he pitched the ninth inning at Comerica Park on June 17, 2005. "It was like being in a bubble," Walker said in a telephone interview on Saturday. "I didn't hear anything." Walker ultimately heard that his performance was a historic one in the Giants' 4-0 victory over the Tigers that night. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the right-hander became the first reliever since the save rule was instituted in 1969 to record a save by entering the game with the bases loaded and striking out the side without allowing a run. It just so happened that the Tigers essentially cast Walker aside by designating him for assignment at the end of the 2003 season, which he spent with their Triple-A Toledo affiliate. "I was really fired up to pitch against them," said Walker, who made 205 relief appearances in two stints with San Francisco between 2004-08. But Walker's wildest dreams probably couldn't have eclipsed the job he actually did after he relieved Jason Schmidt. Walker related that catcher Mike Matheny prescribed low-and-away fastballs to the first hitter, Ivan Rodriguez. "I was just trying to get a ground ball for a double play," Walker said. Fanning Rodriguez boosted Walker's confidence, which continued to grow when Craig Monroe stepped in the batter's box. "I played with Craig, and I knew he couldn't hit high fastballs," Walker said. Monroe went down swinging, bringing up Chris Shelton, who also whiffed on a slider in the dirt. Walker, who took over as the Giants' primary closer that year after Armando Benitez was sidelined early in the season, underwent rotator cuff and labrum surgery 11 months ago but has been rehabilitating with the intent of pitching again. Walker hasn't ruled out pitching professionally this year if he's given the opportunity. But if he can't find a team immediately, he hopes to find a taker on the free-agent market this offseason. Lefty J. Sanchez throws off flat ground DETROIT -- Left-hander Jonathan Sanchez threw Saturday for the first time since going on the disabled list June 25 with bicep tendinitis. Sanchez said that he made about 25 tosses, all straight fastballs, on flat ground. Sanchez, who began the season as the Giants' No. 2 starter, still leeds the National League with 59 walks. His poor control, reflected in his 25 walks in 25 2/3 innings in five June starts, was at least partly attributed to his injury. Sanchez felt no pain as he threw, but remained cautious. "We'll see how it feels [Sunday]," said Sanchez, who's 4-5 with a 3.81 ERA in 16 starts. Chris Haft is a reporter for MLB.com.
