Tim Lincecum has been dominant since starting his pro career last summer. It's no surprise to those familiar with his work and repertoire from his successful career at the University of Washington. Lincecum has an unusual delivery. With a catapult-like motion, he appears to pull the ball out of one of his shoes and then almost brings his arm straight over the top when he releases the ball. Coming over the top is the only way he can generate any downhill plane on his fastball, since he's relatively short for a right-handed pitcher, and it also gives great depth to his curve. That two-pitch repertoire is pretty special. His fastball is typically in the 94-97 mph range and gives the illusion that it's rising or "exploding" as it crosses the plate. His curveball is a swing-and-miss pitch, a 12-6 hammer that he uses primarily after getting ahead in the count via his fastball. His high arm slot limits his ability to get good lateral movement on his pitches, however, so he tends to work vertically.
