Whatever the level, he dominated. The Giants' top pick in June's draft, Lincecum succeeded in 2006 in college and then in Class A, and he carried it over this year to spring training and Triple-A. Now comes the tough part -- doing it in the big leagues. "He's got a chance to be real special, and we knew it, and that's why he's here," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He'll pitch well here." Based on his elevated level of success at various stops, most recently at Triple-A Fresno, perhaps Lincecum's main objective will be learning to cope after a tough outing. He never had to deal with failure at Fresno , where he had a 4-0 record, 0.29 ERA, 48 strikeouts and 11 walks while surrendering one run in 31 innings. "I think it's eye-opening to all of us because [the Pacific Coast League] is a hitter's league," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said. "Look at the stats and they're unreal, especially for a guy who last year was pitching in college." Lincecum, 22, made his big-league debut Sunday night and had a so-so performance against the Phillies. He surrendered a pair of two-run homers to Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard and was pulled after 4 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and issuing five walks. Still, the prevailing opinion in the Giants' organization is that Lincecum will be a star. "You'd like to think he's up here for good, but we'll just have to see," Sabean said. Lincecum's next outing is Friday night in Colorado, and it'll be telling if he can bounce back. But then what? The next scheduled turn for the No. 5 starter is May 17, and that's the day Russ Ortiz will be eligible to come off the disabled list. It's not easy to dismiss Ortiz and his 110 career wins. Despite a lousy 2006 (0-8 with an 8.14 ERA for Arizona and Baltimore), Ortiz was resurrecting his career in San Francisco before going on the DL with an elbow ailment, prompting Lincecum's promotion. Ortiz twice pitched deep into games in April -- 8 2/3 innings against Pittsburgh and seven innings against Arizona, the team that released him last season with $22 million remaining on his contract. With Ortiz part of the equation, the Giants' rotation posted the National League's lowest ERA on April 28 at 3.09 (it's now 3.94). But the Giants aren't eager to buy a return ticket to Fresno for Lincecum, who at 5-foot-11 and 160 pounds looks more like a soda vendor than a phenom pitcher. Yet he seems to use every ounce of energy to throw in the high 90s, and he displays excellent control of his breaking pitches. And it's not as if he lacked memorable moments in his 100-pitch debut. After Victorino homered in the first inning, Lincecum struck out the side: Chase Utley, Howard and Aaron Rowand. He retired all three batters in the second inning and the first two in the third. But then Lincecum walked Utley and surrendered Howard's monster homer to center. "In college, he could basically just throw it up there," said Dick Tidrow, the Giants' vice president of player personnel, whose staff emphasized to Lincecum the importance of working the corners. "His equipment got him through the day. It won't work in the pros. You have to learn to command the baseball, and he bought into it." Lincecum learned a big lesson in his debut. "Here," he said, "they're more consistent with hitting those mistakes." The Giants expect him to adapt. Just as he did last year as a junior at the University of Washington, where he was 12-4 with a 1.94 ERA and led the nation with 199 strikeouts to win the Golden Spikes Award; he was the 10th overall pick of the 2006 draft, earning a $2.025 million bonus. Just as he did in Class A, where he was 2-0 with a 1.70 ERA in eight starts to warrant an invitation to spring training as a non-roster player. Just as he did in spring training, where he was so impressive that veterans began calling him "The Franchise." Just as he did at Fresno, where he was the pride of the Pacific Coast League. As big league debuts go, Lincecum's was nothing like another not-so-big Giants pitcher who also made his first appearance against the Phillies in San Francisco. It was July 19, 1960, and Juan Marichal threw a one-hit shutout, collected 12 strikeouts and didn't give up a hit until Clay Dalrymple's pinch-hit single with two outs in the eighth inning. Forty-seven years later came another highly anticipated debut. Now it's up to Lincecum to dominate in the majors as he dominated everywhere else. --
